Enlighten a conversation I'm having with my wife... does anyone still hunt with a Tethrd Mantis?

About all safety harnesses and ropes have a 5 year manufacturer's expiration date (serious).

I don't know if this will help you to bring up! It might make the hobby seem unreasonably expensive OR it might be a reverse Uno card.

Well theirs probably at least one other person that will use a mantis yet but I doubt they would be on a saddle hunting forum in the spring. I personally gave mine away and don't miss that torture swing in the least.

New aspect for your wife. Your 4 year old saddle is reaching the end of its 5 year life and could become unsafe. Safety first.
Similar concept to how I convinced my wife what brand of boat the next one should be. We went to tour the plant where they make them, and when setting up the tour, I asked the tour guide to mention safety features as much as possible.

Of course they were bought by a competitor and closed down, but my plan was working until that point.

I'm sure I'm in the vast minority who actually found my XL Mantis comfortable (it just goes to show how we're all different in what suits us) but even I have retired mine for 3 years now.

I use this approach… She always comes first. She'll see boxes from Amazon or EWO or BWCG or 3 Rivers archery or other places arrive at home, and she'll ask "what is all this stuff?" and I will say "when is the last time I told you that you could not buy something?" then the conversation is over. This has worked for 35 years so far.

I told her I think I'm the last one... :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

And I just compared saddles to bras... I said to her, "Imagine you bought the very first commercially popular bra 4 years ago. It was marketed as the best, lightest, most comfortable.... game changing.... bra that was ever invented. And you stuck with it... even though it wasn't comfortable, for four years...making little upgrades, making it work.... even as you see a dozen companies sprout up, revolutionizing bra design. All kinds of innovations, improving the design, making them so comfortable, for all day sits...er, I mean wearing. Eventually, it's time to upgrade."

This all started with her question, (you know that tone in her voice), "So why do you think you need a new saddle?"

Hahaha... just venting.

So ready to pull the trigger on a Wood Deluxe :)
You have the perfect logical argument/explanation. We’ve got a good healthy balance here at home with the budget & I get that same response from time to time. I usually respond with yeah you’re right I don’t actually “need” it but I really would like to get one I’m gonna sell a few things to offset most of it….. never had an issue. Plus my wife has got some great intuition if she’s questioning maybe it’s because I’ve been off the rails with hunting gear or other things & she’s trying to see if it’s some that’s actually important or just an impulse. Sounds to me like you’re getting a new saddle……..

Pull the trigger. 1st You have to make it her decision or at least include her. I spent 40K on a lake boat without asking her. She said " YOU SPENT HOW MUCH!" She was a little upset but it was my money so she couldn't get too excited.. Then I Took her fishing in it a few times w/ the grandkids and now she's like " this is a great boat, when the next time we're going fishing?" When I wanted a jet boat for fishing the river, 1st I took her and the grandkid's bank fishing to a remote spot that the land owner gave us permission to drive to. Everybody had a great time. Fish caught, G kids happy, so the wife is happy. ( happy wife. happy life). Then the landowner revoked the permission. So I had a buddy take us there by boat. Everybody again had a great time. Lot's of smiles and pics! When a screaming deal came up on a jet boat, It was an easy sell to spend 22K. The G kids love it, so she loves it. Except for the occasional snake! then she get little bit owwy!

Speaking of safety, you can also bring up how tethrd has a history of multiple products being recalled, some multiple times! You wouldn't want to risk continuing to use a product from that type of company because you care about coming home to your family.

Yesss I got to try to be helpful AND continue to be a tethrd hater all in one post!

The only saddle I've ever bought was a Mantis. I still have it. Don't use it a lot, but when I saddle hunt I use it.

I'm wanting to get a different one. Honestly, I haven't really enjoyed the Mantis, and I kinda wrote it off as not liking saddle hunting. I'm going to get a different one and give it one more shot.

Most handmade, custom input, saddles are better than a tethrd saddle!

I can't relate. I married a unicorn - honestly she encourages me to buy stuff I want, and reminds me that I should buy powder and primers while they're available.

That being said - start stacking does and keeping that deepfreeze full of meat and fish. The wife may not understand the call of the wild, but she'll understand being able to go grab a package of free range protein without breaking the bank. Cook her some good venison...it's how you win hearts and minds.

dont tell her, but i'm an idiot. i bought a mantis when they came out and still like it. have used it a lot and plan to keep it until it is unsafe. only thing i changed was adding an adjustable bridge.

Definitely NOT that kind of unicorn.

The kind that isn't high-maintenance, makes good money, treats be great and seriously is 100% hot babe.

She can't throw a shad net and doesn't clean fish, though. I overlook it.

This is where I was at up until a couple weeks ago, and then I started toying with the idea of upgrading. Yes, an adjustable bridge was essential to making the Mantis tolerable.

If a mantis works for you, there’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. My understand was that lots of hunters enjoyed and got many years of hard use out of them.
