EWO Squirrel or Treehopper steps for ROS?

I want to put together a 3-step ROS to complement my JX3 saddle.

The key question is what type of steps to buy: EWO Squirrel or Treehopper steps, and why? The Squirrels are a lot more expensive, but may be more durable being aluminum rather than composite.

Looking for pros/cons/comparisons to help me make my choice.

Thanks!

1” squirrel steps for the win.

I’ve used both and prefer the tree hopper steps. Larger surface area for foot pad, wings in rear of step for less movement when pressure is applied, and cheaper. Squirrel steps will last forever and are easier to pack.

I can not say anything about the squirrel steps. I love my treehopper steps with thier long handled ocb.

If you want to try something similar to the EWO's the Hawk steps are solid. I paired them with the OCB from EWO and couldn't be happier.

I just started using ROS and after looking around.. the hawk monkey bars seemed like a good bang for your buck so I bought some. They work really well for me with an OCB. Hard to mess up a small piece of aluminum for the price!

i thought the treehoppers were a bit more solid in the tree, but not worth the size penalty, they're pretty clunky to pack (granted i had 5, not 3, and hadn't done the win shaving mod to help them "stack"), but got rid of them shortly after getting squirrel steps. the squirrel steps move slightly, but i haven't felt unsteady/unsafe the few times i've used them so far. either way you go i wholeheartedly second (third/fourth?) the OCB reccomendation.

1/2 lb per step? Um...I wanted to stand on them not throw them to kill deer! :tearsofjoy:

Lol! Just wait until you put side pressure on them. I snapped the wing off a Treehopper step and cut the hell out of my shin. I posted it a while back. Mark was super nice and returned my money. Squirrel steps are even worse with side pressure you can look up posts on that as well. You can’t get a step with a flat back solid on a round surface. Simple geometry. Good luck!

I don't know what Treehopper's weigh. I know many are doubling up their primary squirrel steps (taping them together) for more standing surface. If you do that, at least those steps are approaching that 1/2lb mark. You don't have to do that, of course, but again, many prefer it.

I think it's more than the geometry though. An arc is relatively minute over such short distances. It's more about the design. I can see the advantage of the Cranfords.

I have 4 treehopper steps on their strap and OCB buckle and it weighs 1lb 14oz. I like them.

I use three treehopper steps and ocb buckle and have never had an issue. I am completely satisfied with this setup. Easier to pack in than a platform and also easier to get up the tree.

I got the monkey bars too and with an OCB they’re pretty much perfect. Compact enough to Sit in a pouch and work great. I still like using a big platform so I’m gonna try 2 monkey bars on that strap. I use a long tether anyway since I lean most of the time and the bars should be a little higher than my platform and be a good fit. Last few sits I’ve just used The ROS and small stick top platform ….
