Fall gobblers

I buy a fall tag here in Iowa every year. It’s either sex, no beard requirement, in the fall here. I don’t generally go out in search of them but since they often target the same food sources deer are I have ended up seeing quite a few. I’ve got no issue taking a hen of the opportunity presents itself just like I’ll shoot a doe if I have a tag for one. Archery you are allowed two here.

Every state is different but I trust our DNR to make the right choices to manage each species and I just follow those rules.
If it was legal and I needed a tag filled, hens would be on the grocery list.

This is a classic fall hunting style. My Dad and I used to love to hunt fall turkeys. My dad was a master woodsmen, one of my favorite memories was coming home from college in the fall on a Friday night, Dad would have the birds roosted, we’d set up above them in the twilight then at first light we would start calling right before fly down time. While still on the roost. That works pretty well too. Get to know the kee kee run call and old hen assembly yelp. Fighting purrs bring in fall gobblers too btw.

I see a lot of bird fights in the fall. They seem to take the same roosts very repeatedly, and one is near a spot where I hunt for deer and they make a racket flying down and parade by me and inevitably a few scuffles break out. My dad has hunted there and likes that spot a bunch because he enjoys that scene more than watching deer I think, except for a big buck.

I‘m ok with Thanksgiving Day only in the fall.

Fall birds make terrible mounts. But the blessing of a bird to fry on the day of thanks just seems right.
Be careful though, typically the season is over for fall turkey on thanksgiving.

I need someone to teach me to use a wing bone call. I can talking sexy with a slate and a diaphragm call, but I have tried them a few times and just can't make them sound sexy, so I leave them at home.
I would start out with a manufactured turkey trumpet as they are easier to learn on.
Once you have mastered the trumpet, move on to the wing bone call.

I have, but they just don't sound as good as a raspy old hen diaphragm. It put three on the ground each of the past 3 seasons. Maybe I will just stick to what works.

There is a definite learning curve associated with the trumpet, but in my area (NJ & PA) no one seems to use the trumpet, and the gobblers seem to answer more readily.

I have shot many Toms in the spring and a handfull in the fall. I have no problem popping a hen in the fall where its legal. I always buy a few extra tags. I took two hens this past weekend. A flock of 18 hens and poults came past me. Taste as good and more tender than Toms.
A few tags filled won't hurt our population around here anyway. Love those turkey burgers!!
