Where the skys are so blue!
Anybody know off hand what size fid I would need to resplice the ropes on my cranford rope steps? Just got them in and really like them, but they won't choke down on a small tree like I want them to.

Figured I couldn't be the only one who thought their splice locations were silly and redid them.

Edit: figgered it out! Resplicing the ropes makes them much mo'betta!

I’ve never had an issue with this but I thought that if I found a tree that I wanted to hunt and it was too small that I would simply wrap the strap around the tree 2x. Do you think that would work?

No idea. In a pinch i imagine a double wrap would do a mediocre job. My biggest issue with the cranfords is removal and stowage fiddliness, at least when used for all steps with no aider assistance (which i haven't tried)

That was my immediate thought as well, but trying it on a sapling in my backyard gave me fits. The wrap interferes with the whoopie moving smoothly. Give it a try sometime and let me know. Maybe I'm missing something.

On a "normal" tree they work really well. It takes me all of 30 seconds to unroll and set one, or take one down and roll it back up. But if you shorten one all the way and look at it, there's 9" from the whoopie to the bury on the end, and that bury is in my mind ridiculously long. You could tighten the thing another foot if you redid it.

Is there a certain distance of bury required to get the friction needed for it to grab?

For the whoopie, absolutely. For the loop that you hook to the step? Not really. I think that even with 0 bury, you'd break that chain link before you had an issue. Look at a locked brummel. How much bury do you really need on that?

I tested it out quickly in the back yard and I think it would work for me. Here’s what I found:

Definitely much more efficient with an aider. I wouldn’t do it without an aider.

I took a couple videos also to demonstrate but Tapa won’t let me upload. How could I send them to you?

That's about what I got. For occasional use, I reckon it would suffice. We have a lot of young slash pines and trees stunted by saltwater intrusion. I'm heading to the hobby store after work to buy a knitting needle to hack up, and a 6 pack of beer. I'll show the side by side results when I'm done.

Here’s how I use them. 4 Cranfords/etrier combos get me 30’. My entire system for hunting and climbing weighs 18 lbs for everything but now.

Yeah I've watched that. Over the summer I'm gonna play with aiders, 1-stickish methods, rope stuff, etc. a lot and get a better feel for what climbing methods (other than bolts) I don't hate.

Nice! LMK if I can help in any way.

Yeah, this is a win. Watching @WHW's video on his climbing methods this evening , he mentioned cranfords couldn't get on small slash pines. I think this fixes that little issue!

I lost 4.5" on total length, and gained a foot of adjustment "down." The last pic shows how the whoopie sits in relation to the step. I like it closer. The only downside os that the modded rope seems a bit harder tobwiggle loose. I did bury my whoopie a little longer though...maybe a half inch? That may explain it.

These and the windwalker are gonna rock for hunting scraggly marsh trees and slash pines!
