First back pack and new machine recommendations ?

I live on Long Island, New York. I have no clue what you mean by top tension and looping the thread around the post. While making this pack my machine stopped so many times I probably could have done it by hand faster. The thread would kinda separate and bind up in the needle or I’d end up with a birds nest on the bottom of the fabric. It’s hard for me to describe the symptoms without knowing the terms. When trying to sew the straps the machine would sometimes go through and then get stuck in the down position. It kinda looked bent outward a little. Seemed like it was getting caught on something. I realize I have a lot to learn and it’s not going to happen through a few reply’s on the forum so I will ask you guys to point me in the right direction. Any books you recommend or videos?
I was having that same problem were it is getting stuck and bending. It’s called hook timing. Watch a video on how to fix it and just keep adjusting and you will get it right.

Just wanted to thank you guys for the replies. I do see a juki in my near future. Waiting on funds. In the meantime I bought a singer heavy duty and it can do most of what I’m looking to do. I started on my second pack and this machine goes through all but multiple layers of webbing or thick straps. I’m limited to what I can fit under the foot. The juki only straight stitches so I’ll keep this for any other variation of stitch I may want. My second pack is 10x better than the first. I think I enjoy the thought process that goes into building a pack as much as the actual sewing itself. Learning a little more each time I get behind the machine. Here’s what I put together the other night. Waiting on my webbing to finish it. View attachment 11225View attachment 11226View attachment 11227
Were did you get that fabric?

Ok guys I’m going to pull the trigger on the juki. Since my last post I’ve made back pack straps, back packs for my kids and other hunting related things. I have threw off the timing and broke countless needles on my singer heavy duty. I’m going to call gold star on Monday to get a price on the 8700 H walking foot machine. I plan to watch all the videos but I may need some help with things along the way. Maybe I’ll start a new thread once I get it. I wanted to thank everyone that contributed to this post in all honestly without saddlehunter.com I may not have found my new addiction.

Just so you know a 8700H is not a walking foot machine.

If you're still looking at a walking foot, you should look at Sailrite. They make some really good machines as well. It was between the Sailrite Lsz-1 (walking foot) and the Juki 8700h. I chose the Juki and it is a great machine. I'm extremely happy with it but sometimes the walking foot would be helpful when I'm working with stretchy materials.

My mistake it was a different model juki that had the walking foot. Significantly more in price I’m undecided which way to go. I might wait to see what sales pop up next week.

If the budget allows get the walking foot du-1181n. It’s 1049 plus $1 shipping from GoldStar. Wish I had gotten it over the 8700H. Not that I dislike my 8700H.

@Bruce G How do you like the singer heavy duty? Thinking about getting one for Christmas.
I think I bought the Sitka from amazon too. You can get that pretty easy try eBay look around you’ll find it. I like the heavy duty. BUT it has its limitations. I was able to make 7 small back packs for my kids but I had to be mindful of construction. Couldn’t stack too much under the foot. Couldn’t get through 2 layers of webbing, 2 layers of fabric and padding for the shoulder straps. I’m glad I bought it. At the time I didn’t have the coin to get the juki and the singer allowed me to get my feet wet before jumping in. I truely enjoy the process or building things and now that I know it’s wasn’t an impulse thing I’ll buy the juki. Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions.

I just looked on this diy section and went to the very first page. There is a thread were a dude is using braided fishing line as thread. Any thoughts on this?

I have never used it but the thread exchange sells monofilament thread. I will think it would work under the right circumstances. I have just been using bonded polyester or Gutermann.
