First buck (and deer) from a saddle!

I was able to take my first deer from a saddle on the 15th! I was actually setup trying to shoot a bear in a spot that I normally have decent natural bear traffic, but being located off an oak flat and near some thicker bedding I knew there was a possibility to see some deer as well. He gave me a perfect 25 yard shot and only ran about 100 yards. The story gets a little nutty after the shot happened though. So about 10 minutes after the shot I look behind me and 3 bear Cubs were coming in my direction. To my surprise their mother was no where to be seen but with it being bear archery season this week in NJ I figured maybe someone had already shot the mother. So I eventually climb down and scare off the Cubs and head to my truck to meet my brother and father to come track with me. My brother is a police officer and happen to have his concealed carry gun on him so he figured he might as well bring it just in case of any bear issues. So after about 100yards of tracking we are entering a real thick area where viability in the dark is probably only 5 or 10 yards. My brother and father were right in front of me looking down at blood when I happen to look over the top of them and see a set of eyes behind a thicket bush above eye level with me at about15 yards.... apparently the bears had already found my buck. As soon as we realized what was happening here comes the mother bear at full charge. My brother fires a shot in her direction but at the ground to try and break her charge and luckily it did. It took us over 10 minutes to scare her off the kill, meanwhile we can hear her trying to flank around us on our right and left side the whole time within 25 yards. Once we were able to push her back to what sounded like 40 or 50 yards we quickly retrieved the deer and dragged it out of there to the open woods where we would at least be able to see 50 yards in all directions. When I paced off the Bush she was charging over i realized she was only at 7 yards when the shot was fired and she changed her mind on the charge. Definitely one I will not forget!!

Unfortunately in NJ they are just waiting to go after people for gun related things, especially the bear loving anti hunters. If we would have actually shot it we would probably be on the cover of the paper the following day being called murderers. Luckily it was on private property because if it was on public you cant carry any type of firearm like that to protect yourself and we would have had ourselves a boxing match with momma bear haha

That’s awesome! I would have to change my pants! I’m in Alabama and I have never dealt with bears. I hope to be able to hunt them with my bow one day though. Great story!

Congratulations nice buck. I wouldn’t worry about the anti gunners. I would rather be trialed by 12 than carried by six if ya know what I mean.
