First impression of climbing with LW Hand Climber

I use a twelve foot tether while climbing with XOPHC and add a foot loop on a prussic below my rock harness attachment point. When I have to step off the XOPHC, I put one foot in the loop. It allows me to drop down enough to adjust the belt on the hand climber and step back up onto the platform. Same principle will work on limbs and knots. I have to adjust for tree taper several times on way up and down many of the trees I hunt from, being able to leave the platform is the best way to fix the problem. Most frustrating situation is to hang the strap under a bark plate in the dark and can not see the situation, then you have to leave the platform and feel for the problem fix it and then climb back on the platform.
Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

@bongo i really got the inspiration to try this method after seeing your video. I had read the threads and figured it would be a great system to try, but stayed on the fence until I saw your video.

Thanks I’ve been trying to sell this system to anybody that would bite but not many takers.

@bongo I guess they all just need a video of you for inspiration! I did lot XOPHC last season I've added WE Stepps so I'm not sure what will stick yet.

Love the new ideas, although I'm worried the hose might add too much weight to the belt which will pull it down a little guess I'll have to try it.

Oh and it does matter how you store your belt, I got some kinks that made it harder to climb with, but I was able to fix it by trying it all up, hard to explain....

@donnieballgame you are exactly right I put the black heater hose on mine and it weighted down the belt. You are the only other person that would climb with it. Never ment to leave you out. It takes pazazz to climb with this system we both know that.

Do you guys like tying your HC to your tether for safety (in case it drops), or to your saddle? Any details there worth sharing?

do you do any cord management to keep that string from getting caught in the teeth of the climber when you're going up or down?

Yes I do but it’s just second nature now I’ve done it enough now to get complacent. The climber slips once in a while and wakes me up.
I had to use sticks one time this year so far and I hated it. Still used my climber for a platform.
Sure hope the Kiwi deal goes through sometime before I die.

I rigged mine up to the tether and incorporated my spare cam jam so I can adjust the length of the safety line quickly.
Just checked the Cam Jam out on Amazon. Nice piece of kit. Looks like it could live on the saddle molle loops when not in use then deploy it to tether biner and pull paracord (which lives tied to HC) through cam to adjust length. Sound like your process?

Gosh I need my saddle to get here so I can try all the ideas out, and stop just imagining them!

I like the aluminum cam jam, but I never used it like that, will have to give it a try.

I did what @bongo did I tied the HC rope(I actually used a strap I had laying around) to the center of my webbing that holds my feet that way when I need to slide my feet in I just pull up on the rope. I don't leave mine connected when I get to hunting height I disconnect my HC rope and tie it to my gear storage strap(bow/backpack holder).

I'm not sure you really need an adjustable rope for the HC, will have to try.

Oh I also pull up on that strap a lot when climbing. Not sure how that will work if you are using 550 cord. You will notice that when climbing like this your legs, at least for me, are not used to pulling up to your butt so I found it is nice to help my legs with one arm, the other arm holds me off the tree.

Also one thing I do is stand on my tippy toes and pull up on my tether ropeman to tighten it as much as possible then I sit down setting the tether on the tree(it will move down once you put weight on it) then stand back up on tippy toes again and tighten again, then I sit and pull up my HC.

Ideally you can get a few iterations of moving the HC up before having to adjust the tether, sometimes you have to adjust every time.

X2 what @donnieballgame said but I wouldn’t use 550 cord. That is your lifeline use something you can’t break. I’ve got 3/16 doublebraid on mine. I tie it straight to the biner and don’t take it off. I slip the climber enough that I want 100% tie off on it at all times. I do not want to try and get my aider out of my backpack while hanging on the side of the tree. Can’t stress that enough strong line. Somebody already slipped and parted 550 cord.
I have been using bungees for toe grab and I also tie straight to bungee but have more cord tied to platform in case bungees break. I don’t see much difference in bungees or strap they both work fine.
And plastic cam jam. $8 Walmart.

Got it. No paracord. My mistake.

I'll look into getting some 3/16 double braid. I see what you mean about lifeline.

How do you use your cam jam in your setup?

On my backband for adjustment instead of the two pursik knots on bridge just hook camjam to backband put modified string from camjam and slip it into tether biner and then adjust to your liking. So tether biner has line from climber or lifeline bridge and camjam line all connected to it.

I get what you're saying, but I am split here. On the one hand, I don't want the line to break. On the other hand, when I fell, I was tied to the platform with 550, and it snapped. I think this was good because it didn't brake the platform. I think 550 should be plenty strong for our application.

What was the situation where they slipped and parted the cord, that you mention?

Yes that was it. Well if there is a chance of me losing my platform because the line is not heavy enough that won’t be my weak link. I’m using 8mm tether most people want more. Everyone to their own.
