Game retrieval

Most have said it already. But states differ on the rules for getting deer out. The Hawk Crawler is a great choice as far as carts. Some use a sled style, other pack out. Good luck!IMG_4820.jpegIMG_4881.jpeg
 
if you have decent two tracks that hawk crawler is a total back saver. it takes the majority of the deer carcass weight vs. 2 wheel carts. but if you have significant thick brush to get through, the hawk is NOT your friend.

One problem I see is NO POWERED VEHICALS ALLOWED at 2 places I hunted. Both Reservoirs in Maryland (Pretty Boy and Liberty)

I elk hunted in Colorado and couldn't even have a tired cart or bicycle. Outfitters and guides got that passed.
 
I’ve been considering buying a deer cart but haven’t seen any currently in production that really strike my fancy.

I Built a Couple Different Styles But They Always Seemed to be Too Much Hassle. Always Had to go to the Truck to Get it in an Extra Trip. My Pack is Always With me and all in One Trip. JMO.
 
We are allowed to use an ATV on public to retrieve deer and hogs. 90% of the time I can get to them with my 4wheeler. I have a pulley setup to winch them into the back if they are too big. When I hunt by boat, I use a cart. I bought a frame pack this year and will hopefully be able to try pack a deer or pig out. Nobody does that around here though. Everybody brings the whole animal out. We have some weekends where we have to bring the whole deer out and get it check out at a station.

Driving up to them doesn't count.

Obviously everyone would if they could.
 
I have a hawk crawler and like it, but it is heavy. And wide. I plan to quarter and pack out this year if I'm any real distance from the truck or if it's thicker, but keep the crawler in the truck in case I get a close or a wider open area kill

I've carried similar to this, but pretty much a flat out refusal anymore haha! I always carried out gutted, because it's less weight, but it always looked like you took a legit blood bath from the neck down. It's personally a cleanliness thing, but it is a valid way, especially for those who need to remove the carcass in one piece. If dragging, I now opt for a Jet Sled; otherwise it's a disassembly and pack out, which is typically the easier option.

I always used to drag, without a sled, up until about 4/5 years ago. Most of my deer were pretty much bald at the end of the drag lol.

Dressed deer will at least be about 20% lighter. Some reportedly measure the delta into the 30th percentile.

My first buck ended up with a sizeable bare spot on his cape from a long drag over hard terrain. Taxidermist wanted to change capes, but I opted to stick with what I had hunted, shot, dragged...as a reminder of what it takes.
