Who has used both. I have used basemap for over 5 years. Is it worth the switch to onyx and can I move all my waypoints I have went doing so. I hunt more than one state as well. I would be using this with. Garmin 62 STC

Garmin basemap vs onyx

I use Basecamp with my Garmin 60CSX and OnX on Samsung Galaxy S20+, for different reasons. You can easily import from Basecamp to OnX, but a little more difficult the other direction. A major lesson learned with OnX is that if you do not have great cell coverage, always go into offline mode so it uses the phone GPS instead of triangulating on cell towers, that will generate some very odd recordings, as in just a few points with straight lines in between each time it gets a cell signal.
Personally I like navigating with my handheld GPS. For one, I find it a PITA to micromanage my cell battery life. Also, when it's wet touchscreens go beserk which sometimes happens even from just dripping sweat. And I just beat my gear up and abusing a $1,000 handheld computer compared to $200 GPS seems idiotic. That said I do like the functionality of OnX for researching and exploring new areas, but I don't see it as an adequate replacement for navigation. So final answer, both.
I have used both Basecamp and OnX and have the OnX chip for my Garmin 64st and have the OnX app on my phone. I used basecamp once. The Garmin is my back up if/when my cell phone battery goes dead. I believe my waypoints are layered from Basecamp to OnX but I'm not 100% sure. I could take the chip out and check for sure tonight. I get all day battery life on my phone switching to airplane mode (so I'm just using my phone's gps) and downloading offline maps prior to scouting or hunting for the day. Each chip for each state for a GPS is costly from OnX, but downloading the elite OnX app for $99/yr covers all 50 states. Use what your comfortable with. I wasn't comfortable with Basecamp and OnX works for me so I'll stick with that. I also buy $80-100 refurbished cell phones and losing or abusing one isnt too much of a concern for me.

Yea but I don’t know if you can do multiple states with it and will keep what I have to this point in markers and waypoints.
I use my old phone for onx, my “ hunting phone” has no cell plan I just pre down load all the maps from wifi service, I usually have no service where I hunt anyways and I have tons of space for maps since there is nothing else on it, no apps or anything, just an old iphone 6

I have got a extra phone. My old one. But I also have the gps I have been using for over 5 years. I would rather have it all in one. I pay the $29 about every other year and update the maps and add more birds eye view.
Seems like you have the best bet and buy. If you want, OnX offers a trial 7 days or something but just be sure to cancel it after or they charge you.
I use onxmaps and basemaps for me its a perfect combination. I am going to Peggy back of some people's points a little bit. Onxmaps very user friendly downloads maps are the best the public land is best in my opinion i can find alot of conservation public land i dont believe you can do on other apps. Alot of icons selections which really nice. The biggest negative for onxmaps is E scouting i dont like graphics very poor in my opinion and you always get images that are in the summer when all leaves are on the tree. I don't care for the topography maps not very detailed very basic i don't like the contour line's. As far as navigating on onxmaps I use a compass or GPS navigating to help find way points. Use onxmaps by itself is very difficult task in my experience. GPS is way more a accurate and should always have compass for backup i carry 2. Basemap and onxmaps are the exact opposite of each other as far as strengths and weaknesses E scouting on basemap is way better they use google earth maps the topography maps are way better more detailed the images and the 3D maps of hills and mountains are far Superior. I am just talking hunting whitetail deer hunting out west for elk is a different ball game. They have some new apps just for that. Overall if had pick one onxmaps is still king in my opinion.
What is the best Hunting app for an Android phone ? I will be using this for my home state. I need one that's easy to use.
Onxmaps in my opinion is still the best overall easy to use the best find public land. Basmaps buy itself I wouldn't recommend.
