Grunt calls

Zero expert here. From all the instances I've seen from my personal experiences it just seems like it depends on that specifics deer temperament. Just like a goose, duck, turkey, etc. Calling at one might bring him right in but then the 10 bucks after him don't even care. I always carry one because of the limited success I have had has put meat in my freezer. Worth calling to every one I see just in case! No matter what time of year it is I'll give it a whirl. I'm just too curious

when i grunt or do any calling on public land in west virginia, i see fewer deer

i think any that respond circle downwind and bust me without me seeing them

before giving up, i called in 2 deer in a few years of trying it out, 1 spike and 1 four point

Pretty much exactly what I do. 20% of the time it works all the time.

Yeah, I’m struggling to make that work for me. My puppy thinks the noises I’m making are a sure sign that I’m dying and gets upset. He is neurotic though, and wholly reliant on my culinary expertise so I get his worry. If only he knew some more prime venison would come his way if I could voice grunt like that.

Now that you know how, practice this while in the house with your wife, she will be SOOO happy with you.
Never practice in the house where she has access to weapons. Do it in the car where she cant get away or assault you with a skillet.

I've blind called a lot with decent results over the years. It has worked effective enough over time that I still use it when things seem to be getting kind of stale in the woods in terms of overall activity. I try to have my setups where they can't circle downwind of me though. My current favorite is the Quaker Boy Brawler grunt tube. It has a unique design and seems to find its way out of your way when you want it too. It has a very flexible "throat like" tube and a great sound. My other favorite was/is the original HS Strut Trophy Taker. Neither of these calls has ever frozen up on me yet. Every 20 minutes or so I like to throw a couple of grunts out there.... burp.... burp... and leave it at that. During the pre-rut and rut, I'll grunt.... wait a few minutes.... mimic a doe estrous bleat.... grunt a couple of times...... wait a few minutes, do a snort wheeze.... wait a few minutes...... lightly tickle the antlers....... grunt a couple of times.... wait a few minutes,.... rattle a bit harder...... One year a called a beautiful buck in at around 10 in the morning in late October doing this sequence. He came in ears folded back and just as he passed by my stand at 7 yards I thought he had gone past me enough but he still caught me drawing on him.... I could see the whites of his eyes as he freaked out. Grrrr. He was a PY boy for sure!!!

Cold spring game calls (nick meinl)- it is amazing what a quality call can do over the the plastic junk (and I have a bunch of them).

It’s all in knowing the bucks personality, time of year and operating in that window. I use it differently based on the state (rut phase, cover, wind, etc).

I have had a lot of luck grunting. My grunting success rate is way higher than rattling or doe bleats. I don't blind grunt a lot but have had success with it during pre-rut and rut. I probably have about a 50/50 success rate when I have actual eyes on the buck though. I think I have killed about 5 bucks over the last 4 years grunting. I only use it if they aren't going to give me an opportunity, cause what do you have to lose at that point.

reviving an older thread...

Lost my grunt tube this weekend.... must have dropped it somewhere or fallen out of my bag as I did a few stalks..

Had an older Primos tube with snort wheeze on top. Thoughts on which one to purchase? seems like the True Talker is a popular one...

I've had good luck using the two true talkers I've owned over the last 20 years, my only complaint is the wooden frame the reed rests on fell out of my first one and got some mildew or mold on the second one. The second one still sounds fine but has a bit of an off flavor now.

I'm currently using a flextone buck collector plus, it sounds comparable to the True Talker by my ear and includes a snort wheeze function as well

Its flexible enough you can "throw" the call in different directions easily and because of its flexibilty and very well made construction, it reproduces the call exactly how you want regardless of its position. From short tending type grunts to louder long "roars" or whatever they call them, it is a realistic sound IMHO.

I used to use the True Talker and it worked great. Now they don't make it like the original and somewhere mine is in the woods. I went to a Quaker Boy "Brawler" and man I really like the sound of that grunt call. https://www.quakerboy.com/product/brawler-buck-call/

I picked a Brawler up after reading some guys rave about it. I think it sounds a lot better than my Flextone Extractor, but I'm a new hunter and haven't grunted in anything that I can confirm. Blind called last hunt and saw 3 bucks, but all came through at 60 yards and didn't come in.
