I am going to be messing with 1/4” amsteel and 10mm kernmantle rope here soon. What is the difference in using the 3 different sizes for a particular diameter cordage?

I believe you are referring to the 3 different fid lengths. You would have one fid that is full length then the short and long fid lengths are basically measurements that are marked off on the full fid to be used in splicing. Hope this makes sense.
