How can I shoot deer accurately with only one fixed pin in my sight?!

When I shot compound I mostly shot with one pin. Even when I had multiple pins on my sight, it seemed that I was always just using one (my 20 yard pin) for hunting shots.

I use one pin set at 25 yards ,so I can shoot out to 35, but I have only shot 1 deer at 35. And 1 at 32. Every other deer was 30 yards and under. Just have to practice.

For me the choice of using a bow is more about how good are my woodsmen skills. It's about being up close and personal. I've passed on many a deer because I was out of position, not because the deer was out of range. I kill because I like it. I don't have to kill deer, I can go buy venison at a wild game store. I've killed all my deer 20yds. and under except 2, and they were at 25. At that yardage I am as effective at killing deer as anyone, no matter what the weapon. I have a single pin slider set at 20. I practice out to as far as I can get a good group, because It makes the close shots easier. Charlie Sheen is weak. Don't be weak. know what your effective range is and don't be throwin out hail Marys just because a racker is out of YOUR range.

Trick pin setup is another option for single pin sights. Youd set it for 50 yards (or whatever the magical distance is for your speed) and aim 12" low for a wide variety of shots. Your arrow stays within a certain kill zone window for a wide range of distances. I think it's more practical for elk where the hold under distance allows you to put the pin right on the belly line.

This is no joke!

I'm making my first elk trip in September. I decided to play with this today, and I may go this route over the EZV. I walked all over the yard from 10-48yards. I hit in a 7" circle(centered on , aiming at the belly line of the elk no matter where I shot from, didn't have to think. The pin is zero'd at 55, so from 49-60 yards, I can do the ole hold under/over if I'm feeling squirrely, and I feel confident I can maintain that level of accuracy.

I've toyed with the trajectory for this for whitetail, and the effective bandwidth is a little too small - it still seems to make sense to have one pin set around 26 yards or so.

Very cool Garrett - Thanks!

Funny to go back and read my feelings on the EZV before the resentment set in for a big buck miss.

Bumping for folks asking questions about rangefinders, heavy arrows, EZV, sliders, trajectory, etc.

Never adopted trick pin method. Left EZV way behind. Single pin slider that stays out for whitetail season.

I appreciate the bump/read. I am set up like this kinda. I’m just setting up a HHA optimizer lite and Locking the pin at 25. I’m 60#, 30.5” draw, 388 grain arrow and around 290 fps.

It’s sideways but it’s a single arrow at 15, 20,25 and 30. It’s a 3.5” circle in the center. I torqued the 25 a bit. I set the single pin at 25 and this is holding at center with no hold over.

Yes, I read through your post last night and this is pretty much exactly where I ended up after a few seasons behind the bow. I use a single pin HHA slider that I set and don't move once it is sighted in. I wasn't hanging around here when this post originally came out, so I missed it. The only thing I routinely move on the HHA during actual hunting is to adjust the cover over the fiber optics to allow more or less light in to adjust for low or bright light conditions. Great advice all around.

Great stuff and that is how I set my slider. I listened to truth from the stand podcast with the owner of day six arrows and he recommended the same thing. He also said he aims at the same spot on the deer, lower third. He also said it helps with deer at longer distances(closer to 30 yds) having more time to drop and your arrow will automatically be hitting lower, like aiming for the heart. And if you are in a tree and closer than 25 and aim at the lower third you will hit higher which is what you want for a shot at a downward angle.
It is all about keeping things simple in the heat of the moment and I can get behind that.
