How to get strange looks. AKA DIY platform

how sturdy are they? I found this one pretty cheap but im 240 just wanna make sure it will hold me.
 
Looks similar to one I found. The one I show in this thread is the one I went with and looks less sturdy than yours. I'm 205 currently and no issues with the platform itself. My opinion (,I'm not an engineer and have noexpertise in metals etc) just based on me messing around. Is that the post or other hardware will fail before that thing will. You could go with 1 and 1/4 aluminum post at 1/8 thicker or more if you want it to be heftier. There are others here that will know better.
 
Oh I thought it was rubber over aluminum when I saw it but I never handled it. You'll have to figure that out somehow

Well here is the next evolution of my platform. Thanks to @Sheldon I have a good way to cam it over. I have significantly reduced the length of post I use. 4 inches maybe. It's an effort to cam over but its tight when done that way. Look at the bottom picture. With the strap hanging slack it stays put (after use). I could never satisfactorily alleviate the top of the post pulling away from the tree. Shortening the post helped likely in large part because the shorter the post the less pronounced the pull away will be. My main concern was whether or not I'd be able to cam it while standing on sticks. Well I can. I found it easier to do when already tethered as opposed to using the LB still. This introduced a problem with getting onto the platform though because it was directly above the sticks. No easy way to keep slack out...dumbass. So note to self I will place platform more to the side next time to make getting onto it easier. I use my tether at chin height and keep a short bridge.
Now that I've built this one and observed some of these tree suit platforms...I'm not sure if this will make it to the end of the season before getting replaced......jerks......
Weight on my digital scale is 4.12lbs so 4lbs 2 ounces.

Strangely enough I learned to offset the platform the exact same way....looking up and thinking ok now what....

Very tough to find lately. I've built a few for some of my local buddies and had to improvise a bit. I`m still trying to get the time to do a top step type on a muddy stick. For the record every one of the scooter platforms I built are working fine with no cracks or failures.I had a couple of bolts that needed tightening but pretty stout setup. Still my favorite .
 
He said its steel on bottom with a plastic top. It weighs 6 pounds. Does that seem heavy or not?

That's pretty heavy. My whole thing weighs 4lbs 2 oz. That being said if its steel I think you will be good to go sturdiness wise. Plus there may be a way to take off some of the material to lighten it up. I took a piece out of mine with no I'll effect.
 
I've found a couple different ones but they look to be around 12'' x 10''..
 
I found a foot plate from another scooter and removed the rubber material . I then could see the bracings and was able to lighten it more by drilling between . This is the one

Oh yeah that one is typically the one guys try to get or use. I imagine it's the lightest slomo has a video on youtube about how he made one with that style.
 
I just got it for $40. Now just gotta figure out what to do for the brackets.

I saw Slo Mo had made some with some angle, can see in the video. I made a couple using 1.5” aluminum angle and they worked well.

I'm convinced theres a conspiracy... tried new stand offs, same issue. The top still pulls away. Everyone seems to make platforms that work. Doesn't matter what I do can't get it solid.
 
Have you tried camming it over with the strap higher up the tree in the back?
 
Yep. Higher, lower, even. Cammed it, three times tightening each time. Tightening it to the point I need to put all my weight on it to cam. It was better with the strap higher but still not good.
 
First off don`t give up . There is a sweet spot ( which you need to find) and in looking at your design I expect your platform is too low on your stick The higher you mount your platform the more bite the top cleat will get. I would move it up and try that first. If you do that the platform should be much more stable and cam down nicely. If not then put a OTB strap on the bottom after you cam it down .
