Just a quick FYI for the JX-3 crowd....

I'm always fiddling with my set up. Here is a JX-3 side pouch/pack I found on Amazon and has been working well. I was previously using 2 Dan O pouches (saddlecloth I think) on each side. You can actually cram a little bit more crap into the Dan O pouches than this thing but I found I was always digging for crap and making noise. So, I now run with this pouch on one side and a Dan O on the other. The Dan O pouch holds my ropes and a water flask so by the time I get up it's mostly empty so I kind of use it as a an extra place to put stuff if I'm going through this pack.

Between these two things and the cavity on the back of the JX-3 (which I use for things that I don't need access to in the tree but I want with me...aka wipes / license / tracking light), I can fit all my gear and still have some room.

This pouch/pack and the Dan O pouch can just be folded up back into the JX-3 when you're walking in and out. You can access it when hunting and during the climb if you leave you seat down during the climb. No need to hook or unhook this stuff.

Note: I added the little molle connector band to hold the grunt tube on the outside.

I"m still figuring out exactly what I"m going to do. Thanks for the ideas! I was just going to run a fanny pack that I wrap around the tree in front of me like I do with the guidos. I just put the fanny pack aound the seat up high(where the whales tale is) and clip it for transport.

That's how I ran it for the first half of the season. That works great too. Fanny Pack in Tree.jpg

I like your setup. Where are you keeping your squirrel steps, how many are you using and how are you deploying them.

Thanks. Here goes. Pic Heavy

1. I use 6 squirrel steps on an OCB. You can get away with fewer, but I like have the option of going all the way around the tree. Sometimes when I get up, I realize I'm on the wrong side or 90 degrees off. I have the ROS plus 2 cranford steps plus a pruning saw in a Dan O pouch clipped to the back bottom of the JX 3.

2. This is what it looks like all packed up.

4. JX Packed Up.jpg4a. JX Packed Up.jpg5. JX Packed Up.jpg

3. In the pic 3 above this, you can see the gear I have in that cavity in the back through the mesh. It stays in there fine and doesn't move around. But, you can not access anything in there during your sit. So, I just have stuff that I want with me but won't need in a tree in there.

4. Now, when I get to my spot, if I have sticks, I take off the pack, unhook the leg loops, remove the sticks and put the pack back on. If I don't have sticks (like a pre-set), i can just unhook the leg loops and let the pack open itself. I then reach around and unclip the ROS pack from the molle clip in the back and put it on the molle clip on my shoulder strap for easier access.

5. When I get settled the pouch on my shoulder strap should be empty (except for pruning saw). The pouch on the right (in the pic above, left from my perspective), will be empty except a water flask. I just put the first pouch into the the one on the webbing.

You may notice I added climbing runners to the lineman's loops to extend them a bit. In heavy clothes, I find they are a little hard to access where they are.

Finally, I added two bungee loops to the belt to carry sticks up with me. Elastic works best IMHO b/c it keeps the stick tight.

This is gold. I love my JX3 but haven't ironed out a lot of the nitty gritty yet. I can definitely put some of these ideas to use. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

You guys climbing with the seat up or hanging?

For me, hanging so I can get at my stuff during the climb. But you can do either...
Thanks! I figured since you stack sticks outside of seat. I'm trying to figure out best stick packing place and what kind of length I'll have before cut some.

Kyler and dlist,

How or where do yall put your extra layers? I just got my JX3 not long ago and trying to figure out all the small details. But my biggest issue is extra layers and attempting to keep my weight down.

Kyler I see we do not live far apart so you know the layering issues with long walks.

I put them between the seat and frame. If it’s really cold and I’m walking far I will be stopping at base of tree to cool down anyway. I don’t mind unpacking to dress then. If it’s 40-60, I’ll usually stuff them where I can pull out from the side while it’s all still packed and not have to take it off. But i never understood why folks out clothes in packs, or need packs with ‘room for layers’. Strap layers to a pack, or shove them in between in the hybrid. Easy.

Same as Kyler. Because I carry my sticks on the outside there is plenty of room to cram in heavy clothes inside the JX3 and secure with the leg loops like normal.

x2

I put my bibs on at base of tree. For my jacket, I bungee it to the bottom of the seat and leave it there for the walk in, the climb up and while hunting until I cool down and I'm ready to put on. I carry one of these in case I drop anything. Thankfully haven't needed to use it yet.

I do the same. Stuff clothes between and my DanO pouches and my one stick all go between.
I often strap my bow to the back if I ride a bike in. Everything is on the Jx 3 if I am on my fat bike

I here ya--but often I hunt and the weather is nasty. clothes strapped to a bag(sometimes wool, sometimes down) can absorb precipitation and freeze solid--if I'm strapping to anything they have to at least be in stuff sacks for me to be happy I generally dress warm in the legs and cooler on top and pack a patagonia micropuff down as an insulating layer I can add if need be. It packs to the size of a sofball. Personalty I dont like have a bunch of different "sacks" or bags, so a pack that can hold everything has always worked great for me. A fanny pack was solid with the guidos--I"d just grab a larger one when I suspected needing another layer. I plan on either using a fanny pack again wiht the hybrid, or this leach pack, which works great and then can be strapped to the tree in front of me for east access.

Great point. I don't bow hunt in that kind of weather, that's when I go for ducks, so wouldn't have thought about that.

I've been using this pack which someone else here recommended. Hang it off the back of the jx3 seat hook and you can still use the single shoulder strap. Doesn't fit my heavy coat but would fit the down stuff great. Any small pack should be just as good. I like the single shoulder strap on this one so that there's no chance of me dropping it while walking/climbing yet it's still easy to grab it from behind me so I can hang it in the tree.
