keeping 12 aluminum steps separate while climbing?

Random DIY idea- Can you sew at all? Take a sheet (or a fleece blanket) and cut a 1 foot wide strip, as long as you want. Sew it into a tube (12 inch circumference, length whatever you want). You can then sew one end closed or just tie a knot in one end, drop in a step, tie a loose knot above it, step, knot etc and you have your own DIY sausage-link style container that'll put two layers of fabric between each step. This step tube can be dropped into a bag (or even sew the bottom into the bottom of a bag ).

Or if you want to get real fancy you can cut slits in the tube for each step and sew individual pockets.

Edited to add- or perhaps use something MOLLE style and slide a step into each loop?

I bet you could do the same thing with a pair of tights or something like that, if you can't sew a fleece tube.

I would definitely use bolts for private land presets if you haven’t tried them they are a fraction of the cost and way better than any rope step.

Why did you say this, I am getting down to last few climbing methods that i havent done a season with. I have been looking for a kit but not sure what all to get

Tree hopper sells bolts, hand drills, and bits for power drills. 3/8 diameter 6 inch long grade 8 bolts are the widely used standard. You can buy them from lots of places. You might also check out cranford screw in steps. I carry 12 of the double folds in a bag when I hunt private. They are hands down my favorite mobile system.

Bumping this in case someone has thought up an idea.

I'm considering going to aluminum steps with daisy chains to climb. I don't want to wrap them because that adds weight and build. The only time they will cling for me is when fishing them out of my stuff sacks. With my plastic tree hopper steps, I carry 6 steps on each side in mesh sacks and they are quiet.

I am trying to figure out a simple and effective way to carry 12 aluminum steps (maybe 6 on each side) in a way that I can retrieve each step without clanging them against their neighbor. Going to the aluminum steps will save weight, so a bonus is if the system isn't much heavier than my 2 mesh sacks with plastic carabiners (to hang sacks off saddle).

Thanks for any ideas. The steps are skeletonized, which might be an exploit for containing them (have considered something that sticks inside the cutouts to hold them, maybe kydex).

Can you wrap the strap around each individual step before dropping it in your pouch? Wouldn't add any weight and only take a second.

Yep, I tried that and it works. But it slows me down (I guess I'm looking for perfection....). I usually wrap the daisy chains used for step attachment around my hand and then use the chain's bungee to secure to step....this falls away in 1 second from step with no unwinding.

I do same with cam straps. Bungee on end of step goes around step and strap bundle and secures to a corner of the cam buckle. Makes it easy to remove each step from leg pack and have the bungee loop off with a flick of the thumb.
