Knaider/Swaider tutorial

Couple thoughts on this since I mocked mine up and gave it a try.

1. I love it

2. This is the best hunting forum in the world because of our amazing members and strong leadership. Thanks everyone and especially redsquirrel.

3. I am blown away at how easily I was able to go up the tree and just how fast it’s was to get to hunting height. It’s not preset fast but it is close.

4. I really can’t say enough how much I love it.

It makes my day to see posts like this. Who would have thought that sharing an idea about strapping a hook to your leg, and looping straps around your feet would be looked at by so many people as a good idea. You'all need help :)

@Peterk1234 you are the man!

Practice today went great! Still waiting on saddle for true test but switched up safety harness to an old strap style that was much less restrictive on my knee movement.

So easy to power up the tree with the LB out just enough to get knee up in front. Love it!

My Kn/Sw is a no sew with all strap adjusters. I ditched the castration bands and just tried to keep the bottom strap adjuster close to my boots. The slippage was much better but not totally solved. Would be nice to have something that keeps them 100% in place, all the time, in the dark, whenever. Regardless, 4 steps, 20-24 feet, awesome!

I also did the no sew method. For keeping the straps in place on my boot I’m thinking about threading some shock cord through the webbing to make a cinch around the foot. In theory this should expand when weight is put on it and then cinch down as weight is released keeping it in place the entire time.

Honestly, this has revolutionize my set up in so many ways that I’m still trying to wrap my head around all of them. I’m sure eventually another system will be developed but until then this is a game changer for a run and gun set up. It has everything. Light weight, safe, quiet, convenient, fast, not to taxing and comparatively inexpensive.

I am using adjustable right and left foot loops I got from OnRope1 and my knaider I was able to make with a rated runner and a Delta link. I put the foot loop on the aider a sewn continuous loop by a girth hitch and attached my carabiner and bungee.

I was fiddling with my Kn/Sw (no sew) today while it rained (no climbing practice) and I noticed that all four of my metal 1" strap adjusters are bending, presumably under the strain of my fat ass (215) climbing with them yesterday.

Should I be worried about this? Using wrong product or put together wrong?

My buckles came today and I was wondering about the strength of them myself. I was also looking at the OnRope1 foot loops/knaider setup that @cedar paul mentioned above..... http://onrope1.com/climbing-accessories/or1-pair-of-stiff-steps-for-double-bungee/. I was am considering getting those and replacing the metal ring with the "Cargo Strap" type hook and adding a calf strap (that wouldn't be load bearing) on the knaider. Then using the other foot loop tie 1" tubular webbing to make the swaider portion and use similar to the @redsquirrel aider and attach to a tether rather than the stepp. Then advance the tether during the climb as a safety and maybe not use the lineman's belt??? Not sure on that part yet as I haven't been able to try the climbing portion of that theory yet.

But I do have a few questions for @cedar paul ...... what are the weights of the OnRope1 steps and do they collapse down nicely for storage in a pouch or something?

Thinking about this... if that strap adjuster breaks while you have your weight on it then it’s going to let out a lot of extra strap really fast and you will no longer have a foot hold which could mean a fall. So I do think you should do something. If you now have the length adjusted properly, maybe stitch the straps together permanently - could even leave the adjuster in there for an added measure of safety...

Please be safe. We don’t want a fall to tarnish the good name of the knaider and swaider! And yeah, we don’t want you to get hurt either!!!!

The footloops have stiffener sewn into the bottoms to make them more rigid and while it does add some weight they pack flat into my pack(relatively flat that is). If I am putting my whole weight on these swaiders/knaider devices I personally like using rated by the manufacturer equipment. As long as proper webbing and stitching techniques are used I see nothing wrong with DIY sets either as my swaider was seen by me.

I am leaning more and more towards using rated components as well. Nothing against the DIY. I'm just not as confident in my abilities to stitch properly on the portions that are load bearing. Thanks for the info on the packability. Any problems with the loops sliding off your foot or are they pretty secure?

I use the metolius easy aider for my swaider little heavy than 1 in webbing but the adjustment and large foot pad are a big advantage for stability for me.

Got an easy aider to go with my swaider, the 1”webbing keeps very tight around foot and the part you step in is solid! Really easy to adjust length as well. Thinking of getting another and working two easy aiders

Mine are overbuilt with 2” straps with metal adjustments because that’s what I had laying around. Works great for me so far. 41D24441-3B1C-4E96-872F-E413040B4911.jpegC2D959ED-75CA-4624-8745-15B976A7AF6D.jpeg

Ok I like that! I have some of that laying around. The two inch will probably be more comfortable on your feet.
I just do not want knots. I hate knots, don’t like them, don’t want them. I don’t want them in my tether, my linesman, my bridge.
I don’t like knots In case your all still wondering! Lol

I started wondering about this. Looks like I need a 36" loop for my Swaider and a 20" Loop for the Knaider. Second one seems hard to find.

I really like those Rope Logic Infinity Loops but man they are ridiculously expensive.

Anyone think these are DIYable? Looks like they are just a single rope that is spliced with some webbing added for the under boot part.

Seems like these and some Amsteel ropes with locked loops (easy to splice) would be light & strong and stay on your boot.

Yes, I couldn't find a 20". I did find a 24", but I think that may be too long. That is why I am going to try the OnRope1 foot loop with adjustable knaider.

Cheaper than the infinity loop. Seems simple enough.

Saw that. Better price but still pricey to buy two.

Doesn't seem as stable on foot as infinity but maybe.

Might just need to get over it and sew my tubular webbing setup. Buying sewing stuff feels a little like throwing good money after bad at this point. Love this overall idea but kinda discouraged at my results so far.
