Leaners and Knee Pads

First season hunting from the saddle so I've done a little bit of both leaning and knees on the trees until I figured out what I liked best. At this point, I have found I'm mostly a leaner and I still wear my knee pads for the short amount of time I do put my knees on the tree.

I use mountain biker knee pads because they are covered with some kind of durable material so no annoying plastic against bark noises and they stay in place really nice while walking and crawling through brier thickets which I have to do for most of my stand sites. Also,a webbing loop around my knees is a game changer for me to rest against the tree .the webbing loop is a double duty red squirrel aider loop that I use to set my LW hand climber nice and high reducing the number of times I have to reset the climber strap

I made this proto-sorta thing for my hybrid treestand setup…a little ghetto knee pad. Just a piece of wood lashed onto the post with my DIY treepad.

So far this year I’ve been sitting more than I anticipated, largely out of necessity as I have a nagging ankle injury that has been bugging me when I lean for a couple hours at a time. That led me to make a tree pad, which I still don’t see as ideal but it’s better than raw knees-on-bark action. Trying to avoid buying kneepads as I got into saddle hunting to take less junk into the woods and needing to pack in kneepads just seems ridiculous.

I haven’t done any all day sits yet, but I am hoping this is comfortable enough to do so. I really like using this platform without the seat, it is just so much more streamlined but I still have the ability to stand comfortably. I just need a more comfortable way to rest my feet for extended mid-day periods. If it works like am hoping, using this kneepad for my sitting/resting time will allow me to dump the treestand seat for good.

If it passes beta testing I will probably look at different material and a better solution for attaching it than the lashing.
