Hello Saddle hunters, I'm ready to purchase my first hunting saddle, I've owned arborist saddles before, and am going to buy the Phantom. I'm fine with spending the money on the saddle however $120 for a lineman rope and tether makes no sense to me.

What rope type and carabiners are you guys buying aftermarket to save money?

For a lineman rope I use 5/16 Sampson ultra tech. I use a 35cm beal jammy, tender and mad rock carabiner.
For a tether I use oplux, 50cm beal jammy and mad rock carabiner.
All of this can be purchased at:

Why wouldn't you use the same type of rope for both the lineman and tether?

I just went through the same thing.
With great advice here I made my lineman and tether from a Muddy lifeline I had laying around. Finished them up last night and they work great.
FWIW Midway has the Muddy lifeline for $20 right now.

Im using black diamond carabiners and predator rope

I will admit, splicing predator rope can be difficult but with practice, youll get there

Lots of good stuff thank you guys. Newbie question, why don't you use one predator rope? Lineman for the climb, setup platform, move it up and use it for tether?

Just not a good / safe practice. While you transfer from lineman’s to tether your not hooked into any safety, even if only for a quick moment.

I like everything about saddle hunting except for the cost. The ropes I can do myself. Saddle and platform seem to be the cost I can't get around. H2 is cheaper, but not really finding platforms at the blue collar cost

It certainly can get expensive real fast. Have you previously hunted out of tree stands? If so you may be able to repurpose one into a platform. For example, the seat for the lone wolf hand climber system is something many folks use not only as a saddle platform, but a climbing method as well.

Yes I have a couple stands but use them for permanent spots. I've thought about cutting up a old alpha but the stand still works well. I've actually thought about welding my own. Kinda like the solo scout size.

Buy once, cry once. Buy the best you can, take care of it and it will last a very long time.

Nobody wants to tell you the truth, because once someone mentions their favorite rope, accessory cord, or carabiner...they go out of stock forever.

Now that's not true . . . I just buy a lifetime supply for myself before I mention anything. . . :tearsofjoy:

You can order a replacement alpha seat from Lone Wolf and the rest of the parts for a platform from DanO. Easy to assemble, light and work great. Roughly $100 and your time to put it together.

I'm broke, have a surplus of stuff, change my method a week later and start the process all over again. Isn't that how it works for everyone? :grinning:
