He was probably less than 30 yards from where we found the last flood last night. We must have walked another half mile or more passed him, but we also walked right past him. We followed blood on the first two tracks, then this morning I literally followed a hunch. Looked where I thought he would likely go towards a downhill creek crossing, where I know dear move and bed. I saw a rock that looked to be a little too light brown to be a real rock, and sure enough they were antlers attached. We walked right by him several times. It was in the 40s last night, so I am presently headed to the butcher to find out if he is salvageable.

Overnight 40s is still fine for deer meat... meat hangs in the market in Thailand for 3 days....idk thats what I grew up with. Meat doesn't spoil that fast....

Thanks brother! Lol I have nothing against Thailand but their food safety practices are not exactly what I would model my own after. Meat was definitely bad. While he was evading my efforts to find him, the broadhead had crept into his stomach and released all kind of nasty into him, and he was stinking to high heaven. All the blood and organs stayed inside him for 26 hours after the shot, and it got up to 55 before I was able to gut him. His flanks and quarters were green, blue, gray, and foul. I could have possibly saved neck meat but I donated what was left to a friend who works with bald eagles. I don’t feel too bad about that. I also have a doe tag still, so I can hopefully make amends with my freezer that way.

Photo was taken 2 hours after I found him, so the daylight is a little different. Still light IMO. He had a black and white skunk stripe on his brisket too, which I’ve never seen but is apparently a trait of some older deer around these parts. He definitely seems lighter than usual for this time of year, I agree.

Evening hunt in about the same spot. Didn’t see anything this morning but about 100 squirrels and heard one blowing. I got busted picking a tree at 1 o clock by two small bucks south of me at about 20 yards. I really thought I was gonna get a shot. Wind was suppose to be out of south but it shifted. Hopefully something else moves before dark. It’s warm and I’m going to be upset if I have to fire up the thermacell.D77C0D60-CA13-4800-B166-C5B3280299D1.jpeg
 
Oh man the action is back on. 4 does crossed the water but went wide. Buck followed across the water. Another larger buck came in to 35 and came started coming to me when I grunted. He ultimately was persuaded to follow the does instead. I would have had a shot if I was in the tree from this morning

LMAO teammate! I did the same thing. I fell in a creek about 5:30am this morning. Completely soaking wet, saddle, bow, backpack, pants, water over the top of my boots, everything! I was scraped up bad too from some rocks. I went home and my stuff is still drying. Had to hang it inside because rain started around noon. Can't hunt Sunday here but going to try again Monday.

Hopefully you're not banged up too bad man! It was fairly mild today but wet mid 30s is a no go

I drove in today to a spot I know no one has hunted since before Christmas because no one else has been silly enough to try to drive back there. I wasn't sure I was going to get in there (or out for that matter) but I managed somehow. Snow was really heavy and wet from the thaw but still up to a foot deep in spots. With only a day left I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try. Then I had to wade across an overflowed creek from the thaw we've had. Luckily I managed to stay dry ( I think I had about two inches of freeboard on my boots).

There's a ton of fresh tracks back in there but I ended up only seeing three all around 75 yds away in the last 10 minutes of shooting light. I'm guessing most all activity is after dark still.

I love the hunting the second season as far as the weather goes. The only issue is the deer are just so skittish after the orange army overruns them.
