Anyone have suggestions for rope to use with the safeguard? It's good for 8.1mm min so I was thinking Sterling htp 9mm. What do you think about this and do you have any better recommendations. The propose is one sticking and repelling.

I use it with sterling htp 9mm and it works great. I thought about 8mm and I’m sure it’s strong enough but I think 9mm is as small as I want to climb on.

8mm might be strong enough but my concern would be it might slip since it's less than the specified size. Thanks for the input.

Be sure to read the instructions on your safeguard or lifeguard whatever Madrock your using....and please understand the difference between static and dynamic climbing rope...the diameter of dynamic rope can change under load to a lower diameter....so if your close to spec you can actually drop below spec....just saying....I use Sterling 9mm HTP static for that reason.....

Thanks sounds like Sterling htp is the top 9mm static rope choice. I was mainly wondering if there was a even better option out there.

I switch ropes for a variety of reasons. But primarily bc where I got my climbing line is not necessarily where I need my tether.

I also just prefer a distel hitch and tender.

I attach the bottom of my climbing line to my backpack, pull it up, and stow it all together.

If you’re one sticking and rappelling, why not use an ATC? Some ATC’s are rated to 8mm. If I was only rappelling with the rope, I'd be using 8mm OpLux and an appropriate ATC without a doubt. But, because I'm using my rope for SRT (ascent) I'm sticking with the 9mm HTP as DanO suggested as it's the smallest available that keeps the Safeguard in spec.

There would be no reason to have an ATC on your rope during the hunt. You could absolutely use a Prusik on your rappel line during the hunt if you didn’t want to bring an additional tether.

I use an additional tether. IF I was using my rappel rope as a tether, I’d have an extra Prusik. This way you could attach your ATC and backup Prusik below your ATC all while remaining attached to your original Prusik.

I still prefer a separate tether but I rarely one stick, mainly SRT.

Do you leave the climbing line attached to the tree then too? I've always just disconnected the climbing line after hook up to the tether and put the rope into the backpack.

I leave it attached. But coil it up and place it in my bag.

In rare circumstances, I will remove and re-attach in a better location for the rappel.
