Looking to pickup some new base layers. First light and sitka looks nice but crazy expensive. Any suggestions?

Love my first lite. Good merino is expensive. You can also look up a "Ninja suit" as a base layer

I have been hunting in the heat this week in Kansas, I use KRYPTEK hoplite 2 merino wool and also the Badlands Pechora merino wool. Both have been top notch!

Check out the Cresta Wool line at LLBean. I love my midweight stuff from there, especially the 1/4 zip shirt. Reasonably priced for quality merino.
The ll bean stuff looks nice. Any washing issues with it being 100% merino wool?

The first light stuff is a merino blend. How does it hold up in the washing?Does it shrink or lose its shape?

I use both Icebreaker and Minus 33, no complaints about either. I'll watch ebay auctions throughout the year and pick up used pieces really cheap. I'm sure the other brands are also fine, just pay attention to the merino percentage. Some will say it's merino, but only use 30%. I look for 80%+.

Last year I also started using Brynje mesh base layers as my next to skin. It seems ridiculous, but they make a huge difference. I sweat less and stay warm with less layers.

I have been using the Minus33 brand that I purchased off of Amazon. It's not "cheap" but definitely more affordable than some of the high end name brand stuff. It is 100% merino and I think the pants are around $69 and the shirts around $89. I like the 1/4 zip shirts for versatility.

I've been singing the praises of fishnet base layers for years but it seems no one is interested in it because the guys on TV or YouTube don't push the stuff. I've used fishnets for decades to keep me warm in Michigan. It's nice to see someone else figured it out and is reaping the benefits of fishnets. I wear Wiggy's fishnets.

The black ovis stuff keeps popping up on Camofire so they have some left. You can call them and order stuff they have in stock even if it isn't online that day. I have some and I like it.

I have also bought some merino from Sierra Trading Post. It looks like they have some Smart Wool stuff in stock right now for around 50% off.

I’ve been hearing ya, Ricky! Had the Wiggys fishnets in the cart but then learned he doesn’t take PayPal! Dang.

I have also looked at the Brynje stuff and it looks sweet - really like how they integrated the fishnet into the merino baselayer. I’m attempting a DIY copy of it if I can get some time - bought mesh fabric which was only like $7, and will fasten it to the inside of one of my merino shirts in sections. Just gotta figure out how to attach it (fabric glue or thread injection). I know it won’t look pretty but it’s a baselayer so I don’t care too much...

Holds up great. 3rd year of heavy hunting, no complaints.
