Michigan Black Bear

Quick question, do you have to wait for drawing results to show that you have a point? I bought mine in store, my buddy bought his in the new app. He's wondering whats up
I think you have to wait til at least the 15th. I just went for the point this time around. I'll have 10pts going into next year. Goodluck and hope you guys draw a tag.
Just curious, did you guys apply for your elk tag also?

Thanks! I thought about buying an elk point but didn't. I doubt my buddy did. I didn't look and see what kind of points are needed for elk but it feels out of reach for whatever reason

I do the "Bull Only" application every year. My rational is that it is essentially a once in a lifetime tag in Michigan so I'd rather get a bull tag than a cow tag. I did the "Chance" application for about 14 years and finally decided to just apply for the tag each year. From my understanding, applying for the tag and being unsuccessful in the drawing still gets you a chance as well.

Just checked my "Chance" history for elk and confirmed that applying for a tag yet being unsuccessful in the drawing does add to your "chance" total.

Michigan doesn’t do points for elk like they do for bear. It’s luck of the draw. You might get first time or like my father in law not yet in 30 years of trying.

Maybe that's why I feel like it's out of reach. I'm not ready for a hunt like that yet lol. Better be a lot more skilled, I'd hate to squander an opportunity like that!

I got mine after 8yrs of applying. Got lucky I guess. Theres DNR licensed guides, they want elk shot to keep population under control. With limited time off, as a state employee, I hired a guide and got it done. Too much ground to cover & its a madhouse with guides flying around everywhere trying to get in front of everyone else. Its worth it, meat was fantastic n got quite a bit out of my 660# 6x5.

Was the guide reasonable pricing?

$600. To me, not knowing the area I was hunting, it was. Thankfully I picked one that had family with lots of farmland. It wasnt really hunting, you find the herd night before and set up on them in the a.m. Then its over. Took 2 days. Fun but didnt really feel the satisfaction I thought Id have. Id like to go west and try...someday when I win the lotto. Also the processing was an additional $200.
I still put in for the PURE MICHIGAN hunt, not allowed to apply for anymore elk tags since I was drawn for a bull. Maybe if I get lucky and get drawn, it will be more of a challenge.

I also will have 9 points for next year. Going to start planning now for a hunt. I have a bunch to check out. Love hearing that others on here are in the same boat.

Thanks for sharing, I think that's all pretty reasonable really. Especially considering you got private to hunt! Total bummer it wasn't .... uh as much of a hunt as you ( all of us I'm real sure) had hoped. But! You got a damn nice Michigan bull elk outta the deal and that's pretty effing awesome!

Jumping this back up, anyone go bear hunting in Michigan. How did it go? Guided or not? Really trying to decide if this is the year, I get an extra week vacation next year. But I'm also getting older, haha

I second the comment about contacting your taxidermist first. a lot of them will even skin the bear out for you.
