I pack them in and also don't wear my saddle in but keep it in a mesh sack either in the pack or strapped to the outside.
I don't like all that stuff hanging off me or getting in the way of my backpack waist belt. I'm like this even on short walks in, but this preference started when I was walking up to an hour in.
I don't need the knee pads to climb, so I just put them on once I'm in the tree and all set. I know this causes slightly more movement in the tree, but it's not too bad.
Wear them. I don’t even notice I have them on most of the time.
I picked up a pair of Kings Camp Preacher pants (on sale) with the built in knee pads. I hated the way strap on knee pad straps felt and moved around. Don't know these are there until I need them. They have become my go to hunting pants until it gets down to the low 30's.
If at all possible I will climb a double or triple trunk tree and lean against a trunk I am not attached too. I also find it easier for me to stay comfortable longer leaning in a single trunk tree if I am on my mission rather than a stand. But if I am going to hunt longer than 4 hours I prefer the stand to be able to turn around and sit down.

I always have stood/leaned most of the time. Even in my climber days. Often lean up against the tree. I like staying tight to the tree, I think it helps with not getting picked out.
It depends what I can get away with. Cover is a factor. Noise is another big one. Crunchy leaves where you can hear anything within 200 yards, you can get away with a lot. Sitting in a telelphone pole in late season with wet leaves, you better make like a statue or you are wasting your time.

I wear my knee pads in and don’t even notice they are there. It’s also nice if you see a critter, you can drop to your knees without worry.
I'm pretty new to saddle hunting, what I've noticed is I move a lot for the first hour or so, until I get "settled in". I use a platform and alternate sitting/standing. When I stand, I find myself swaying a bit. I use the back band and if I can get dialed in with it I can usually sit still much longer.
Fortunately I hunt in some thick stuff most of the time so the cover conceals my sin pretty well.

At 13lbs without sticks might as well carry a climber.
Movement in the tree was what got me out of the saddle for a while. Then I found the JX3. Multiple problems solved.
That’s exactly what I did as well. Although I also covered them in duck tape because the bark was slowly damaging them. I’ll hang hang my back pack in front of me at knee level if I want even more padding.
