My Hand Climber Blew Up on Me

Bongo!! Your the man, I thought it was more like a thousand trees! Glad your ok, love your attitude. Mine is still going strong but I'm sure it will go kaboom at some point. I do know a mini climber/ climber is coming but don't know when. I need to follow up on that.

Yikes. I’m not giving up on my LWHC, but I always have a 2TC on my person as backup. There is a new option available someone just posted.

3:29 "Step #1 - The Ascent 2 must be used in conjunction with an industry approved tree saddle."

Yeah ok. Which one is that again?

These guys are on the right path but you have to be able to adjust at height. Average tree I adjust at least twice not counting the aider that is the first step. I set the platform at chest height to mount with aider.

Adrena123 its been awhile buddy. I was being conservative with number of trees and thats my 3rd platform. They sent a new immediately when I called them and I didn't even ask for one just a courtesy call to tell them it blew up. I don't think the bolt mod had anything to do with it. The tree was to big for it im pretty sure. Was in your neck of the woods deer moved first couple days then it got hot and they turned off. Keep in touch my friend I'm still kicking.

Glad you're okay. But I'm not surprised that something that was not intended to hold someone's entire body weight, and was modified to boot, blew up. Good on Lone Wolf for still replacing it.

I agree it isn't designed for saddlehunting, and was modified, so...yeah.

But it certainly was intended to hold someone's entire body weight or you couldn't climb with it. (I've seen reports of it cracking with treestand use too, btw).

I love the idea of the thing, but don't use it because it seemed a bit underbuilt for me. I cut up a stand platform. Can't say it's perfect, but seems more robust.

Looking forward to what hits the market next year.

I agree. Ill stick with my LWHC for now

You hand climber guys would be better off using the bottom piece of the climber instead of the hand climber. You could cut it off shorter if you like but it is not heavy and there won’t be stories like this to tell Glad your alright

There's a thread where someone here did just that, trimmed the bottom of an assault climber down so it was more compact.

Maybe that user will chime in.

I guess you could use an angle grinder and go slow (?). I don't know if these cast platforms have any sort of a heat treat that can be screwed up, or maybe the casting process heat treats(?). @Weldabeast might know.

First off Bongo I’m glad you’re ok. The breaks I’ve seen are from being drilled or the type of outward twisting like this one from larger trees. I don’t think it’s the rigidity of the bottom part of the climber that prevents this but an extra crossbar on the arms. That part takes all that inward pull on a small tree or outward pull on a large tree. It might be in the way but if correctly placed it would take a lot of pressure off that casting.

do you think someone could add this to the seat climber?

I don’t have one anymore but it’s may be tough to get it close enough to the tree to leave ample room to use as a platform but far enough away to clear the tree when tilting to climb.

U wanna cut cast aluminum treestand? My first choice would probably be the jigsaw or sawsall....cut off wheel works too. I have no idea what the material they use to make the castings....but I can pretty much guarantee it is the cheapest they can get. I highly doubt they are heat-treated but could be wrong....I don't understand the fixation with cast aluminum....

What? You mean my Petzl carabiners aren't made out of 3003 grade cast aluminum ?!?

I don't know that either...but if it is made from a cast I bet that the biners are heat treated but I think that biners are made differently but that is just a guess

Just joking...they take aluminum bar, bend it, and then heat treat and press it and other steps. I watched a video on their factory and was super impressed. Each 'biner is hand inspected and even tested at a non-destructive amount of force.

I added a crossmember to my LWHC and I liked how ridged it made the climber but it made it hard to climb with.

I cut up a fixed position cast LW Assault with a Sawzall and then used a file to smooth it out.
