New 1 Sticking options!

But then you are back to needing a platform.

It's just preference of course, but for 6lbs (or less), I like a bigger platform like a Fix or Rebel or X-Wing with a minimalist one stick. While it is more components, you don't have to climb over a top platform and in the end, you have more platform (which to me is a good thing).

#ROSforLIFE!!!

Sure. There's that, lol.

To be fair though, a bigger difference is climbing height potential. You can really get up there with a One Stick setup to heights where there is a clear weight advantage over sticks.

On the other hand, climbing efficiency favors sticks in many situations, like trees with lots of branches or heavy leaners, etc. And, while you don't need to rappel in either system, it is more prevalent in single stick climbing and there is added weight there too.

But to your point, I don't know why I wouldn't save at least over 1/2lb by choosing a Lookout Bottom Step over the EWO Ultimate Lower Step. It's actually cheaper to buy the Lookout Bottom Step and a new EWO standoff drilled for 5/16". I cant see a performance advantage to the EWO component.

When the standoff is integrated to the the ”platform” like the EWO UP or ULS it seems to me that it makes stick more solid on the tree with less movement. Have you experienced that or is it just my perception?

I really like that thing. However, I’d like it a lot better if it had a channel in the back like the EWO steps have so it only needed one bolt. Don’t like having to drill more holes in my stick to mount it. Just unnecessary in my mind.
I like the idea of 2 bolts. Will be resistant to wobble type pressure.

Idk. Could be something to it, but seems unlikely to be significant to me, especially on a bottom step component.

But I have't run through all the numerous formats and iterations of one stick setups like @SRT Saddle Hunter and @enkriss and @phatkaw.

I saw where there was some movement on the initial design of the OOAL Monarch when the platform was loaded. Frankly, from what I've observed, their aluminum i-beam seems to twist/flex a bit more than 1/8" square tubing, even when configured for standard sticks. (Though in it's best applications, it's a super compact and strong approach)

I've climbed on sticks with rotating standoffs and non-rotating standoffs, and found that in many instances rotating standoffs lock a stick in better than the latter. This may not be the case for a stick mounted platform seeing weird pressure, but for a bottom step, I'm pretty confident in the Real Deal Amsteel bottom step design with a separate standoff. It's rock solid for me. How much play do you think there is between an EWO stick and EWO standoff? I think that'd be hard to even quantify.

But I can see where you're coming from when evaluating a stick mounted platform. Maybe post bend and twist is increased with separate components.

I spend very little time on the bottom step. I'll stick with the weight savings a well.

Im sure its fine and all but I didnt like it. So I found some bushing and made it fit nice. I bought one step used and you could see on the paint were some movement occured between the step and bolt

Or just switch to 5/16 bolts… couple passes with a 5/16 bit & done.

Then you have to messing around drilling the standoff out for the cap bolt to recess into it like it does

Pretty doable diy with access to some tools or a machine shop might do for a few bucks. I'd just spend on a EWO standoff bored for 5/16", under $30 shipped.

I love this lower step, but I can't bring myself to see how its 70 dollars. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I have UOS with UP platform and normal bottom step with a 2 step ulimaider. It weighs a cool 4 1/2 pounds. Even with the ULS, I'd challenge anyone to find sticks and a platform that weigh less than 6lbs.

I'm struggling to see how multiple sticks is any more or less efficient. You still have to use a second linemans rope or use your tether to pass a bunch of limbs when getting around limbs. Same with a one stick. It just takes a little more "planning" as you move up the tree with a one stick to make it easier on yourself.

But what do I know? I'm just getting started with this whole mess.. lol

Ive used sticks and I one stick. 2 reason I prefer one stick over multiple. You can climb as high as you want and it packs away quick. Weight and efficiency have nothing to do with it.

Off the top:

5 Tethrd One Sticks and a Pursuit Platform.

Can I use aiders now....

You like living life on the edge?

Let’s not forget the rappel setup and all that that’s needed when one sticking.
