New from Northeast Alabama

Bstevens, I'm pretty much starting from scratch on Wheeler. Any tips on a general area? Mainly looking for some meat for the freezer.

I hunt Wheeler too. Advice - Scout, scout, scout and then scout some more. Pay attention to hunting pressure and adapt to it. Don't hunt the wrong wind. Those deer are highly pressured and don't put up with much. Review the regulations so you don't get in trouble. They have extra regulations than AL public land or WMA since they are Federal Wildlife Reserve. Make sure you have a permit. They are free, but you need a copy on you.

Wheeler has a lot of acreage but can be pretty thin in some areas. Be careful how close you hunt to the edge. If you shoot a deer and it runs onto private you must get permission in the state of AL. Much of the private land surrounding Wheeler are hunt clubs so if your deer runs over, it can be hard to figure out who to contact since no one lives there and if you get a hold of someone you may not be able to gain permission because they may not want you walking around their club. Learned that lesson by experience one time. Had a buck run onto a hunt club and could not ever get a hold of anyone so I was unable to continue track.

Here are the regulations and permit. Either print this off or pick up a copy at the Ranger station.

All my license and permits are good to go. I'm using OnX to be sure of the boundaries.
