New rappel device for small rope?

I wouldn’t be surprised for some mechanical belay devices to come out for the smaller diameter ropes that are becoming so popular in the Canyoneering world.

For now though there is the Alpine ATC that will work with the smaller ropes.

I saw that when I was researching, but can you hang on on ATC like you do a madrock? I'll have to look into that. A figure 8 is coming with my 8mm predator rappel kit so I was going to use that and just hang off a friction hitch till I'm ready to come down.

In order to hang off of an ATC you either have to have a friction hitch on the rappel rope, either above or below it, or you have to tie it off. For our use, a friction hitch would be easiest since tying off is a bit of a chore. I would suggest the friction hitch below the device since it wouldn’t have to hold nearly as much weight (similar to the breaking hand) making it easier to release and move.

You can do the same thing with a figure 8, add a friction hitch either above or below. Again, my personal recommendation is below. A figure-8 is also fairly easy to tie off.

I think the issue for me is that I weight 260 and I have not found a hitch yet that will release easily once I’ve had to put my full weight on it except those that require a whole bunch of space. I was also taught the hitch below the device many years ago when I was into climbing so it’s just sort of stuck with me.

The Sterling F4 device can do 7.5mm to 8mm. I use it for SRT/2TC . It is is a bit more cumbersome to install/remove from the climb rope and doesn't move up the rope quite as easily compared to madrock or grigri .

I spoke with hangfree today and tried to get some info on this new device but they wouldn't offer any details, only that they know something is coming but they're waiting to hear details about it too.

Can I use just 2 auto blocks to repel done with instead of a mad rock or figure 8?

That looks sharp. I love the fact you don’t have to have a carabiner. Eliminates some of the potential noise and shortens the attachment to the tether. I do wonder though if it doesn’t have a spring to keep it open, like the Life guard and the regular GriGri. Watching the video it looks like it might but hopefully it doesn’t. Will be curious to see what the price will be.
