Newbie bigger guy looking to saddle hunt

6’1 290 here and have zero issues. I feel safer in a saddle than any treestand. There is a learning curve in saddle hunting but nothing too hard. Just practice and figure out the best system for you. I’ve been told the XL mantis is a little bigger than the size 2 kestrel. I guess I’ll find that out when my mantis shows up.
That's interesting I hadn't heard that about the mantis. I will probably plan on picking one up this summer. I currently have a predator on the way so I'll test and report back with my review on that.

I use the Kestrel size 2. I am a 44" waist and have no issue. Even with more cloths in the colder season. I use 3 lone wolf sticks and 1 hawk as my top. Most of the season I utilized the hawk as my platform with a ring of steps. I did get a preaditor platform at the end of the season. Love it. It feels more comfortable to me. I did set it at the same height as my hawk step so I can still move around the tree a bit.

This is my first year using a saddle. I didn't have hip pinch as much as gut pinch. The length of the bridge made a big difference in comfort. DIY sportsman showed a mod where you use a prusik knot on 1 side of the bridge. He did it to allow the bridge to get longer and fit over his head walking in. I tried it and it seemed to help. I also added knee pads for the last few hunts. That helped a lot too.

As far as safety goes, no issue with saddle hunting. All the webbing and ropes are rated for way more than me. Compared to years past using a lock on for mobile hunting I feel much safer. Tied to the tree the entire time and no awkward step onto the stand.

I am still trying to figure out comfort. The back rest, knee pads, changeable bridge length, and preaditor helped but I am not there yet. I read a post somewhere here where all the talk was about cutting ounces from the set up. One dude said he lost 40 lbs and that helped a lot... kind of the obvious thing that cool gear mods won't get ya. I've never been able to pull of any significant and lasting weight loss (short of giving up my lock on for a saddle) but that is the plan for this off season.

Hope this helps.

I have notice that I prefer a little long bridge than the light weights also. I'm currently at around 32" and that's about perfect. With a 24" bridge it was digging in pretty good. So what's your plan for weight loss. I'm currently trying to adjust my diet with the help of my wife and I have lost about 10 pounds so far just cutting back on sweets and carbs. I'm hoping to be at 250 which I haven't seen since my junior year of high school by the end of summer.

Agreed! Bridge length is key.

So far I am 18 days in at logging all my food on Myfitnesspal. I think its helped make me more aware of the crap and amount of food I am eating. Drive some better choices. I haven't weighted myself yet but it's a start. 250 was high school for me too.

Good luck!!

I am also wanting to get in the saddle game. I am about 6’ 245lb. Down from 308. I have been researching here and you tube on saddles. I like the looks of both mantis and kite. I am concerned with a tied bridge. I think being new I would like to have an adjustable bridge so I could dial in the comfortable length. Could any of you fellow big guys confirm if the factory tied bridges are comfortable lengths or you needed to add an adj one/different length?

I believe the kite has a tied bridge like my kestrel so it would be easy to change lengths or add a purssic/ ropeman to make it adjustable. The mantis has a fixed 24" bridge, which is a little on the short side for me. I personally prefer a removable bridge. I don't see the need for it to be adjustable after you get the length figured out. Congrats on the weight loss. Any secrets you can pass on?

You don’t want to do it my way! Finding out the woman you loved and was totally dedicated to for 12 yrs decided “ she loved me but wasn’t in love with me” and left taking my 9yr son. So I hope no one has to lose it my way.
On a better note thanks for the info!
