I did something similar but with Stepps. I used a multi step aider on wild edge Stepps. Got 7 foot per Stepp. Problem was I wanted to re use the aider for the next Stepp and I couldn’t remove it while I was standing on it. I would reach down when I was on the Stepp to take it off where it was attached below my feet so I could reset it on the new Stepp over my head. That felt awkward. I found that climbing the aider till I was about waist high with the Stepp then girth hitched my lanyard with a foot loop ( like the red squirrel aider setup) allowed me to transfer my weight to the lanyard and unweight the multi step aider, remove it, and step onto the Stepp without reaching down. Is that what you are thinking but with a short one step stick?

If I build something like my old short stick I would put the step on the bottom of the stick and the aider off the top so I could easily remove the aider. Right now, I attach my aider to the top of a long stick and take it off when I get to the first step.

The reusing of the multi step aider is what is causing me pause about the setup. While the use of multiple aiders is an option, I do not like the idea of leaving them behind and possibly flapping in the wind. Using the tether is an option, but I find it clumsy and could interfere with the stick or Step (both would be set as high as you could reach). But I may have a solution. Bare with me, I am going to try to visualize it for you guys.......

I think this would work with the Step, not sure about sticks:

Picture a length of webbing that loops around your foot but can be cinched tight so it does not fall off. The other end of the webbing almost goes to you knee and at the end is a hook; much like the one RS and others are using for their OCBs/strap arrangement. This end is strapped around your leg just below the knee. So as you climb the aider and get one step below the Step (and maybe a stick) you hook onto the step. So you have moved the load onto the "aider" that is strapped to your leg and allowing you to easily grab the multi step aider and bring it with you as you step onto the step, then set another step.

As sketchy as it sounds, I think it would be stable.

Almost. Except the aider would be short, only go to just below the knee, and fastened around the upper calf/knee area. And you would have a hook on it. So you never have to hold onto it. You never have to move it with your hands. You hook and unhook with your leg. It is only used when you are about 15 to 18 inches from the step, otherwise you are stepped into the multi-aider. I am probably not explaining this very well.

So you could put a versa button on the bottom of a stick and have a setup like this picture?

I used the cinch aider in my video most of last year. It helped a lot getting extra height. My biggest fight and you can notice it in the video was my linemans belt. With an aider I tend to step up into the aider then go straight to my solid step to get out of the aider as soon as possible. That makes 2 steps without bringing up my linemans belt and it hangs me up sometimes. Nothing worse than making the motion to step up and get anchored down from the linemans belt. I would have to slow down and bring up my linemans belt every step. But I’m using my arms to pull myself up while I’m in the aider. I don’t put all of my weight in it. I guess I just don’t trust it. That’s why I’m planning to go to the Cain’s method next year. No linemans belt or aiders to fight. I don’t have a problem installing the WE Stepps.

Seems like we never stop trying to perfect the method that might suit us best. Innovation and change and something new never ends on this site.
