It’ll lighten the load but be cognizant of the amount you need for your eye /knot to your delta link, and different tree diameters. It’s not uncommon for an 8’ tether to only hang down 3 or 4’ after it’s hitched to the tree. If you end up in a large tree and you want to get at least 15’ to your foot height, I wouldn’t want my rope any less than 28’ personally. If it were me, I’d cut it to 30 or 32 and see how it suits me then make my decisions from there.

even if i go 30’ with a 30’ rope, and 10’ of around the tree (leaving me 10’ short), I’ll just move the tether height before i start to come down. But since its a negligible weight savings, I’ll probably just leave it alone. The weight is on the ground as i climb anyway. Better to have and not need, than need and not have.
