ordering stuff for my first saddle setup, have a couple questions

Thanks for the mention Huck, and I haven't even hunted out of a saddle yet...I'm gonna try and prove it can be done on the cheap, or at least semi cheap, no promises.

Are you making it to Saddlepalooza 2019???

I don’t know if they can handle 2 of us. Plus I went to college on a corn hole scholarship. It would just be bad all around.
I’m more of a loner. I’ve done all the forum big get together stuff before. Too much for me now. But I did enjoy this years from the couch. You gonna have to come spend a weekend at my Ms camp.

:tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:.... Yeah you seem about as controversial as I am so maybe you should stay home again. But we do need some more corn hole players. It seems like I remember reading about your full ride corn hole scholarship to LSU. But being a loner isn't a good enough excuse. We'll see you in 11 months;)

I’m calling BS! I guess you will have to come to saddleplooza 2019 to prove me wrong? Lol

It can be done cheaply. No doubt about it. My setup is less than $100.

Lol. Maybe 10k hahahahahhaha

But if you have self control, unlike me, and you stick with one thing, you can do it.

My Sitdrag, ropes, & modifications are very inexpensive.

To answer the original question.

What do You need. My suggestion is visit G2 try all his stuff figure out what works best for you and see if you can buy it from him for half price.

The best suggestion is be slow to buy stuff, and do simple things that the majority on the site do
Look for methods that suit your situation. Such as You don’t need spurs if they are illegal.
Most of our different approaches work. Everything else is fine tuning and not always a necessary purchase. Ask yourself is it light and simple and safe and are a lot of saddle hunters doing it that way. Is it in my budget as well

Then you will not spend $10,000

Im working on ordering stuff to get this all together. My plan is to use tubular webbing to play with at ground level to see what length bridge works best for me then make a rope bridge. I need to order either Amsteel or Predator to make my hunting bridge with. Which is better or is it just a matter of preference? What length rope do you normally start with to get your bridge? Is splicing it going to be the best bet or can I tie a knot in it?

Also what carabiners would be best to get?

The original post

I loved Hucks reply

Some answers
1. Most like a 24 inch bridge - I like an adjustable bridge
An adjustable bridge is helpful for beginners
I still like an adjustable bridge but I am in a minority on that point
2. Amsteel and predator rope both work fine. If you want to learn how to splice use Amsteel on the bridge.
On everything else use predator so you can use a ropeman 1 for adjustments
3 A ropeman 1 is one of the few things that are a necessity.
Prussic work on tethers and lineman’s belts but ropeman work way better

As said above you can spend as little or as much as you would like. You need a saddle, a platform, and a climbing system.
For a saddle you only need one. The new kestrel is nice. The sit drag paired with a rock harness is super lightweight and the cheapest option. It also requires the most diy upgrades. The evolution is nice but heavy and requires adjustments. The trophyline is another option and I think once the kestrel isn’t back ordered anymore the price of the trophyline will be comparable to a modified sit drag. The guidos web is as much a chariot as a saddle. Is heavy but the most comfortable. There are endless options but those are the most popular.
If you already have a climbing system you are comfortable with I would stick with it for a little while until I got comfortable in the saddle.
The most popular platforms are a ring of steps and xop seat type platforms. There are rumors of at least two new platforms this year designed specifically for saddle hunting. There is also a rumor of a new strap on step for platforms.
I would at least get a ropeman1 for my linesmans rope. I think they would be popular with guys hunting from hang on stands if they knew about them.

Ok that’s probably the smart approach but it’s way more fun to try everything. These guys on here had me shopping for a cnc mill, a commercial sewing machine and a 3D printer.

For some here it starts as a lightweight hunting option then becomes a hobby. For others it becomes a way of life and for a select few it becomes a obsession that consumes them. When you start googling lock stitches and splicing rope you will know your almost there. Before you know it you will be learning to see so you can make your own purse oops I mean dump pouch.

Good post for new saddle hunters

Ok I got my sitdrag in the mail today, I’m gonna start modding the sitdrag with elastic and padding etc. while I wait for my ropes, carabiners, Ropeman to come in. I think I’m going to start with a ring of strap on steps and go from there.

Someone is going to say it so I will be first to say you should use a climbing harness with the sit drag.
The elastic and padding are the least important mods to do to a sit drag.
Start with sewing a loops and adding a belt.
G2outdoors has good videos on the mods he did to his. T
