Pack modification for wild edge steps

I like it man. Thank you for sharing this. I was concerned with being able to carry what is needed for an all day hunt which is pretty much the items you have listed. My main concern would be my extra beanie, gloves, and jacket. Later in the season I use a “Firstlite Sanctuary” jacket which is kinda bulky and takes up a lot of room in a pack. I suppose rolling it right and cinching it before strapping it to the outside would poss do the trick. I’ll look more into this pack. Thanks man

I have strapped fanatic jacket and bibs to it in late season, usually just the jacket and sometimes jacket and kelvin layer. I will drape them over the top and strap then into the side. I have thought about adding molle loops for additional pouches or tie down points down the side but I’m not sure they are needed. If I decide to make/purchase sticks with a fixed step I may have to modify the outer pouch but I actually think if they are packed with the step towards your back it may work out good the way it is.

I have a Kifaru pack (bought for elk hunting and run and gun whitetail) and just purchased one of their grab-it attachments. Works really well to keep the steps tight to the pack and also on the outside where I can get them quickly and quietly as well as not using up storage space in the pack. Extremely pricey for the pack and frame, but a lifelong investment IMO.

I will keep this in mind for the future. If I purchase any more packs my wife might actually shoot me

I just strap it down to my pack on the outside with a bungee cord that criss-crosses across from side to side, with some fixed cord going across the bottom which hooks under the point on the bottom couple of steps. Additionally I take the strap of the Stepp bag and run it through the carry handle of the backpack, do a girth hitch with it, and then run the excess down and tucked behind the Stepp bag, just as a fall back if the bungee cord fails or shifts. I'm typically only in that configuration for less than an hour, so it doesn't have to stay forever, but it's never slipped or fallen, and once I'm at the base of the tree, slip off the pack, transition Stepp bag to over neck and shoulder, put pack back on, and I'm ready to climb.

P.S. In the picture, this was my first attempt, and I used paracord, and it took much longer to attach to the pack, but was super secure. The bottom two loops of the paracord remain in the new version to hook the bottom and hold it, but you get the idea with the criss cross of bungee vs. paracord. Stepps and Pack-small.jpg
