Any ideas on how to pack them besides a fanny pack in my backpack? Then pull the fanny pack out and put it on before ascending the tree.

I bought a four pack to try a while back. One thing you can do if you have a saddle with Molle Loops on the back - you can stick the step in a loop for storage while climbing. It doesn't help for packing, unless you were to put them in your loops, then roll up the saddle and pack that.

I just roll mine up and put them in a fanny pack. Never really had any issues.
