Primal vs wild edge?

I have wild edge steps and have always wondered why they just didn't use an adjustable strap. Are the primals a suitable substitute?

The rope is nice because it is light and metal free. It is easy to tie once you get used to it.

A traditional climbing stick strap can be used and the benefit is fine tuning the tension. It might be slightly faster too.

I might have posted about this a while back....

@pesqimon pretty much hit the nail on the head. They both have their benefits. The primal straps are slightly easier to tension correctly but are much noisier and more cumbersome to get into and out of the bag.

I went with primals because of the price. I swapped the buckle for 1/4 amsteel. I actually used them as my main climbing this year with a 3 step cayg aider. Also used them as a ROS. I actually used them this year more than one sticking, and I LOVE to one stick. If you don’t want the buckles I’d recommend just going with the WE right off the bat.

Primal here. Wrap in vet tape. Cut off the buckle part of the strap and use the rest of the strap to tie the same knot as the wild edge. Strap won't stretch so gets super tight. Can't beat $7 a step!

I did the exact same thing. Didn't like the noise and fiddle factor with the buckles so changed out to 1/4" amsteel. I put a small piece of lead in the end of the amsteel and taped it in place to help in getting the rope around larger trees or in windy conditions. I don't climb with them anymore but still use 3 for a ROS. If I had to do it again I'd just buy the WE to start with.

I did a similar thing but I used 3/16 amsteel and used a a nail weight. Slide it right into the hollow part of the amsteel. And then put a loop of shock cord in the end to wrap it all up.

I’ve been using Primals a lot this season. I tried amsteel, but it is not quite as easy to adjust or untie versus the WE hollow braid type rope, so I went back to that.

I am going to make another platform insert after the season using plastic (cutting board type material) as opposed to wood and experiment. Many short evening hunts have been done standing on a single step. Not the most comfortable option, but works ok on a 1-2 hr hunt and only carrying 4 steps at 4 lbs total.

How do you carry them? I can’t say I love the WE pouch…

I am waiting on my 3D Genisis Printing Gripr. Hoping it will streamline the carrying/deploying/ storing process for my W.E. steps.

I have a cheap hydration pack from Academy with a simple outer slot pouch that holds up to 5 (probably more, but that’s as many as I carry). I have never owned one of their bags.
