Prusik Knot on Tether from Muddy Safety Harness

I have a prusik knot that was on my linesman's belt from a Muddy safety harness. I had planned to use this on my tether but as I am getting to putting my tether together I am noticing that the Prusik line is connected with what appears to be metal binding clips with shrink wrap tubing around the overlapped rope. Is this safe to use on my tether? I've taken it out on the tree and bounced around a little bit this seems to definitely be the only area in my setup where I have doubts, although it has not failed. If it is not safe, can I take it apart and use a different knot to tie the prusik line together? Thanks in advance Saddle Hunters!

It’s probably safe, considering that’s how muddy sent it, and in a prusik knot almost none of the load will be on that spot. BUT. If you aren’t 100% confident in your gear, change it so you are. I always back mine up at height by tying the end of my tether into the belt on my saddle.

Barrel knots are what you use to tie a prussic. Just remember that it will be a good bit shorter because of how much rope it takes to tie knots.

Did it bother u when u were using it before?
I used that same 1 u have. I recently replaced became I've been using the same linesman for a while and I felt the need to retire but never and an issue. If u order a muddy lifeline now they are using a knot on the prusik instead if the clamp

I think this is not safe. If it were safe, then why does only Muddy do this? The force with which a pressure clamp holds a rope (and hopefully doesn't cut it) shouldn't be trusted for life support. Why are climbing/arborist companies going through the trouble of sewing and splicing when all they need to do is clamp down some (sharp?) metal clips? I also don't believe it makes sense to think something is safe because a corporation with a recognizable name does it. I can think of tons of consumer products that hurt people (what was that car that kept exploding when rear ended?)

Even if that was a good idea for a lineman's prusik (what it came on), a tether sees way more force. And Muddy didn't market it for that.

I had the same prusik with an old harness and thought it was horrible at the time and didn't use it.

If you are just starting out, why not buy an already sewn cord? What diameter main line are you running. Saddle hunting is not something to rush.

Look here

The camo eye to eye prusik is similar to what aerohunter sold with their tethers and it worked well and was safe. I have one on my back up ropes.

Sorry, Welda, but that's about as good an argument as "I drove 100 mph all the way from Florida and I survived, so that must be a good idea". Also, a lineman's sees way less force than a tether.

I don't have an argument.....muddy sold thousands like that and I'm sure some survived to hunt on another day...muddy also doesn't make them like that anymore so that says something.....

As far as tether vs linesman seeing more force?...does it really matter which 1 sees more? If either 1 fails u have a bad day.

To the original poster...if the clamps make u question the safety aspect of it....get something that doesn't make u question it if that gives u the feeling of better security. I was just giving my personal experience with them....clamp style kept me safe for 4 seasons. The clamps haven't moved but the rope itself has seen better days. I see if I can find them and get a pic

It sees more force as a tether, so it would be more likely to fail as a tether. That's all I meant there.

Thank you all for your replies, I am new to Saddle hunting but have been interested in this and researching for a few years now. I have the Samson Predator Rope (11.4mm) that I am using for both my linesman belt as well as my tether. I've been using a Ropeman 1 on my linesman and had considered using it for my tether instead and switching the prusik to the linesman belt, but then in my research I have found some differing opinions on that as well (and some good arguments against it). Ultimately I need to come home to my babies, I think I'll err on the safe side and get a new rope and tie a barrell knot on the prusik for the tether. So switching gears, what is the correct size of rope that I will need for the prusik? Any recommendations for the type of rope?? (I live in a small town and no one here uses a saddle so I am at the mercy of the webs :) )

I also use Samson predator for my tether and I run Bee Line 8mm (5/16”) Prusik Cord by Yale.

I ordered a sewn prusik from Wesspur of it. Please note that I am not a professional and use your own best judgment and do your own research.

"Bee Line from Yale Cordage is one of our most popular prusik cords and provides excellent performance on a wide range of ropes. Bee Line in this diameter is best-suited for use on 7/16” (11mm) climbing lines.
Please note that the hand-spliced eyes on Bee Line and HRC will be stiff initially. This is normal. These type of eyes may offer resistance the first few times you put a carabiner in.

Cord Tensile Strength: 8,000 lb

Heat Resistant: Yes

Construction: 75% Technora/25% Polyester cover, Vectran core

I just looked up barrel knot on animated knots and it wasn't found. I was just reading on some climbing site that a double or triple fishermen's knot is the recommended. Is that what you are referring to as barrel knot? https://www.animatedknots.com/double-fishermans-bend-knot

I'm only asking because I just ordered some rope to make a new prusik.

Knots have too many names for the same thing....fisherman's knot is also the uniknot and I'm sure it called a couple other names also
