Rapid rails

I have a set of five aluminum ameristep rapid rails that I bought new probably ten years ago. I haven't used them more than a handful of times, they are practically brand new. I'm just getting into saddle hunting and was wanting some thoughts on using them as a climbing method. I know there are newer lighter options out there now but since I have these I thought I would give them a try first. Any pointers on the making them quieter, lighter, or carry easier would be greatly appreciated.

They should be great.
Head to your stand a couple minutes earlier than you normally would so you can be deliberate in setting up if you are worried about time or noise!

I have two sets of those and I use them for presets. They work fine and great for morning hunts where you don't want to set up in the dark. Greg

I just sold a set. They do work but I just have too many steps and sticks so didn't need them.

I have some. Spray some foam int the main tubes to deaden the gong sounds the can produce. Also covering the ends in duct tape stops any creaking noise they make while seating them onto the tree. I’ve reduced the number I need to carry by tying aiders onto mine.
I use them for gun hunting so two gets me high enough.

I have some as well. I used them my first season hunting from the saddle because, like you, I had them available. Ultimately I decided they were too cumbersome and noisy for my liking so I've been trying different methods. I think I've finally settled on a mix between SRT and the Wild Edge Stepps. SRT is the ultimate minimalist approach but some of the areas I hunt don't have great trees for SRT so I'm using the stepps in those areas.

That’s exactly what I did with mine, foam really dampened them a lot. Plugging the ends is a good idea. Aiders work great b/c they stand off the tree a good bit. I haven’t weighed them but I always felt like they were pretty light....... oh btw use a linesman’s belt. I never did before but the last few years it’s been part of the regimen!

A little more on this thread. After watching a few vids on the timer hitch, I’m going to mod my rapid rails for the timber hitch method.
I know at least one other person has modded their rails. Question for anyone that has. The thickness of the metal on the tubing is just over 2 mm thick, so pretty thin. For anyone who has drilled a hole for a post or button for use with a rope mod, have you ever inspected for stress around the holes? Stretching or cracking? For the welders out there do you think welding a post on would weaken the rails?
