Rope question about the Stepp ladder?

Has anyone used a different kind of rope other than what comes with the stepp ladders. I've been thinking a thinner climbing rope would be easier to pack back into the bag and maybe work better than the rope they come with. I would attached the rope using probably a figure 8 follow through the use the regular loop that stepp ladder recommends. Just curious if anyone has tried?
