@Flint That’s awesome!! I’ll go try to find my old “saddle” from any moons ago. It was an old park swing seat (some sort of rubber) and tow rope webbing! I Loved that thing. I used log nails to climb….still a few of my old sets in the Colorado mountains. I built it back in the late 80’s.
This is a GREAT thread! Let’s see some more Smithsonian saddles!!!!

I’m going to find my old saddle now!!!

Thought you all might enjoy seeing what brought me to this forum. I bought this from a yard sale back in 1998. Hunted with it till 2016 when the belt shrunk on me! Started looking for a bigger one and found this place! Been an adventure sense!View attachment 69705View attachment 69706
Dude you were hunting from an old utility belt? Looks like a phone company one. Most the linemen run leather. Not bad for leaning if you’re ok with the pressure all on your back and hips but I think you’re gonna find new saddles a huge step up in comfort

I love it.just wait till the panic police see it
What do you mean? Those are 5000 lbs metal rings on each side of that thing. I spend hours upon hours on them. Nothing for anyone to panic about as long as you don’t fall lol
I can tell you first hand a short fall on a utility belt doesn’t feel good. But it’s designed differently than a saddle or a RCH

That’s an old school 4-D arborist saddle. Buckingham and Weaver Leather still make them, do you know what company made that one? Never saw a blue one. I’ve used one before, when suspended from an overhead tie in point, it squeezes the thighs together, so hinders mobility a bit. There’s definitely working climbers still doing their thing with that type saddle.

The only numbers I have ever found. I believe it's just safety information. I was hunting old line trees at the time. Smallest one was 2' across. Double " lineman's rope" and I don't remember it being much different than the 2 panel saddle I built going on 3 years ago. I've built 7 single panel saddles which my kids are using now. I just kept going back to how this thing felt.

I still have mine. Its red though. I just used it this summer hanging a stand for a friends farther. Brings back memories, I spent the better part of 18 years in one of those. Minimalist not, I have hunted from a bowline on a bite now that's minimalist. Before someone created these hammocks everyone hunts from now. Including me;)
