Getting ready to PCS to Ft. Drum next year and as the season winds down here in NC I’m already looking forward to next season in a new and unfamiliar place. I’ve been hunting Ft. Bragg for the past few seasons but I’ve heard the hunting/fishing around Drum is pretty special.

Not sure if we are gonna buy a house there or live on post but if I could find the right house with some acreage to hunt we might do that. Snow removal seems like it could be a real pain off post though so that’s a little intimidating.

I pretty much bow hunt exclusively but have picked up a rifle a time or two over the last few seasons. I likely won’t take be taking many (if any) firearms because it’s NY so I’ll be primarily bow hunting.

Plan is to hunt the Ft. Drum reservation but would be interested in any info from a saddle hunter who has experience in the area.

Any archery clubs nearby with 3D shoots? Are private hunting leases a thing there? Is it too cold to saddle hunt lol? Any info is appreciated!

I’m pretty far west from there, just wanted to say thanks for serving man, there’s some truly outstanding soldiers and leaders in the 10th Mountain.
Lots and lots of bear out there too :)

Thank you I appreciate it. Man I didn’t even think about the bears. Never been a consideration here in NC. Guess I’ll need to add a 44 mag holster to my saddle .

I was stationed at Drum from 96 to 2000. Hard to believe that's 20 years ago. The hunting is fabulous and the deer are big. I shot my first 200 pound buck on post. In addition to deer there are plenty of turkey, grouse and ducks to hunt. The fishing is great too. Steelhead, salmon and large smallmouth. It does get cold but that's why the deer are big. You are in for a treat!

I live about 1 1/2 hours from there. Yes the snow can get bad but you get used to it. Either get a snowblower, truck with a plow or pay someone to plow. As far as hunting Drum has some awesome lands (I've never been on them to hunt but know some people that have) and the state lands that are local are pretty damn good along with thousands of acres within a short drive. Just to the east of drum is one of the best areas for bear in the recent years. Search the Town of Diana and neighboring towns.

Yeah the time sure does fly. Got a couple buddies out there that rave about the fishing but they don’t hunt at all. Gonna have to try to change that when I get there.

Awesome thanks for the info! Never bear hunted but I’m down to give it a go. Looks like you only get 2 tags for deer there so maybe I can spend less time deer hunting and more time hunting something else. Been wanting to get into duck hunting and turkey hunting but something usually gets in the way.

I’m pretty sure Greg Godfrey was stationed there for awhile before he went to Fort Bragg. Maybe that is common knowledge.

My Great-granddad, granddad, and great uncle were all in the 10th MT Division in WWII and all were very successful hunters in their time, but weren’t saddle hunters.

You get a bow/muzzleloader tag and regular season tag(2 tags), Then you put in for DMP's (deer management permits) for antlerless deer and can get 2 of those .....but can also get 2 signed over from other people and you can also get 2 more November 1st if there are leftover DMP's for the area you want. Feel free to shoot me a PM and I can give any info you may need. Lots of great areas and NY is great for sportsman .....unless the politicians get involved but that's for a different thread!!LOL

Any interest in ice fishing? I'm up to Chaumont Bay most weekends once the ice sets.

Never tried it but to tell you the truth I’m interested in trying a little bit of everything up there! I’ll have to look that place up.

Ice fishing is a great opportunity to utilize all the CIF issued cold weather gear. Don't say I'll never use that. You will! Lol.

I agree with this message, I love this area but the politicians make living here hell sometimes

So a little update. Hunting Ft Drum has been incredibly frustrating because of the way they manage the areas for training. Archery areas have been closed a good majority of the season so I’ve had to adapt on the fly.

Come to find out the wildlife department declared war on the deer in the cantonement area a few years ago so they are almost wiped out. 2018 would have been a great year to hunt here.

I’ve managed to tag a fork horn on Ft drum and 2 doe on public all with a bow. I’ve seen plenty more that weren’t in range. Went goose hunting once and came to the realization that I’m not very good at that but it was fun.

I joined the Bear Pac Archery club which was cool. Did a couple shoots there and one at the Mad River club. Plan to do more next year.

All in all it’s been a steep learning curve but I’ve enjoyed my time in the woods here so far.

Snow removal anywhere around there…regardless of on post or not sucks. When my in-laws were mowing the grass in Michigan in the middle of May I was snow blowing 2’ of snow out of my driveway in West Carthage. While the hunting is great on post, you have Tug Hill to the south and thousands of acres of state land nearby. By the way, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid are awesome in the wintertime.

I’ve heard Tug Hill hunting is good but I haven’t travelled down there. I’ve been down to Pinckney road a few times with no luck but my buddy got a good buck in bow season. Not looking forward to the months of snow but I’ll deal lol.
