I know the Safeguard is not rated for The Oplux rope...... but who here uses the combo with no problems for defending out of a tree?

I think the CV rope(or what ever it is called) is rated for the Safeguard?

thoughts?

I haven't defended out of a tree yet, but all last season I rappelled down using Oplux and the last half of the season I used a Safeguard. It is out of spec by .9mm so I cannot recommend this for anyone. For the record, I'm 235 pounds without gear so I'm not a lightweight. Canyon C-IV rope is 9mm so it is in spec of the Safeguard.

@Buckhorn70 - Here's a recent post I authored about belay devices and ropes, in response to a request for recommendations:

I defended out of a tree once. Had a pack of wild dogs come investigate me as I was climbIng down one morning. Once I figured out the little one was in charge and sent him off squealing with a well placed pinecone, the rest followed. Definitely felt like that scene from the hobbit movie, lol.

I tried oplux with my safeguard. It climbed really well by I had problems rappelling with it. The oplux wanted to bind up in the safeguard because of its thin diameter. I had to use a hand ascender and aider to take my weight off the line and unjam the rope. I was kind of stuck halfway down. It wasn’t a good experience and I went back to the 9mm htp which runs great with the safeguard.

I climb and rappel with them with no problems at all. Not sure if weight has anything to do with it but I’m around 200.

I rappel with the safeguard and oplux. It is slightly small, and rappels a bit faster than a rope in spec imo, but I just make sure to have a good grip of the tag end of the rope.

If you are are concerned about it, stay in specs for the hardware. I do not recommend using hardware out of specs. Each user assumes the risks of using something out of the manufacturer's specs

I've got a question for those who have tried both oplux and canyon c-iv. With weight and size aside, which works better in wet or icy conditions?

I’m a canyon and safeguard guy myself, and I’ve yet to find a reason to try the more expensive and out of spec oplux with it. Canyon packs easy and works smooth

If you use a beal jammy with the safeguard and oplux will it catch you if the safeguard happens to fail?

The specifications say that the jammy will hold you. I run mine in a auto block configuration on my right hip attached to my lineman loop. You would be hanging at a odd angle, but you won't splat.

I'm a user of Canyon C-IV for both SRT and rappelling with a Safeguard (when single-stick climbing), and while I highly recommend it, I cannot tell you how Oplux handles while rappelling. I choose not to use Oplux [out of spec for my device(s)] for SRT or rappelling. I do, however, use Oplux as my static tether and my lineman's rope when climbing with more traditional methods. Canyon will definitely absorb/retain less moisture than Oplux, but you do make a slight sacrifice in overall packability. I also choose not to use an autobloc or backup, which I cannot recommend to anyone...
