Just a reminder to always be attached to the tree at all times. I learned my lesson the easy way last night as I was climbing down and my third stick gave out. Thank the Lord I had my linemen’s belt on and just swung into the tree 15 feet off the ground. I was able to hug the tree and shimmy down to my next step. The boys got smashed pretty good but other than that I was all okay. In my three years of climbing trees I had never needed my safety equipment before and always thought of it as a hassle I had to deal with. I have gotten lazy before and climbed down without a belt but never again. This was the awakening I needed and I feel blessed I got it this way!

Thanks for sharing. What exactly happened with the stick? It kicked out, or broke?

I don’t know exactly it was dark when I climbed down. All my sticks were rock solid on the way up as they always are. When I went to put my weight on the first step of the stick it gave out and slid down the tree I thought maybe the buckle on the strap gave out and loosened up but I put the stick back on the tree when I finally got down and bounced my weight on it for a bit and it was solid.

Glad you didn’t get seriously injured. I had a stick kick out the other day. My fault for side pressure but I was still on my tether and was able to get the stick straight and reset. Safety measures do seem like a pain. But they can prevent a lot of pain. Glad to see your linesmans belt stopped you.

Damn ! Glad you are ok. Broken bones or worse are more of a pain than the few extra minutes of safety.

I had a stick swivel out from underneath me while I was on the top step a few years ago. I have noticed that anywhere there is a concave spot in the tree, you have to be really careful to avoid brackets sitting in them.
