Stands, platforms etc.

I’m finally glad some one brings this up. If you mention this on the forums or Facebook, some of these fan boys lose their mind.

I got bit by the saddle bug hard about 5 years ago and I ran it hard for 3 years and then this year I went on a trip to Ohio and ran it hard for a week.

I hunt all public, rarely in the same tree ever. I climb towers for work so ropes and heights are familiar. I hunt with a crossbow now (ya ya, 3 kids and I like to fish and shoot deer, not targets). I’ve killed a pile of deer on the ground, with crossbow and mostly muzzleloaders

Some of my findings:

I get picked all the time in a saddle. I got picked by a smasher this year in Ohio, good wind and not moving. I’ve got picked every year in a saddle, not moving with good wind and thermals. Here is the thing, I think deer recognize the human form when we are standing/leaning. I don’t think deer recognize you as a human when you are sitting. Ya they know something ain’t right, but I’ve killed a deer in a life jacket from my kyack and in a leaf suit with my crossbow. They get spun up but don’t seem to freak out.

They are not comfortable. In sit in a climbing harness all day, but I’m constantly moving. In a saddle I’m constantly fidgeting. I used to run a ROS with knee pads. Then I went to a platform. That helped, But I’m almost like shoot, I’m carrying in a platform, why not just carry a tree stand.

With a crossbow they are less than ideal. Too much swinging out from the tree to avoid smashing bow limbs on tree and or bridge/tether. I’m actually looking for a LW Sit and Climb so I can have a nice shooting rail. I have brought my shooting stick with my LW hang on.

Where do they shine, lighter, can fit every thing in a bag when I go in my kyack or deep water swamps. Less medal for noise.

As far as the light weight, that is not really a problem for me. I mean ya heavy sucks, how long are you guys walking, I mean my farthest walks are 2 miles on a trail, any farther than that and I’ve walked across a road, or I’m out of the public land. Besides I’m sitting for longer than I’m walking for so I might as well prioritize comfort.

Where they really shine, I think is with a gun in the swamps or thick. I can carry two sticks, no lineman’s belt just tether, and be up overlooking the brush in five minutes for about 10 lbs of gear total. But I can do that with a RCH too and I don’t need a saddle.

Anyways, long post, but my 9 yr old (shot his first one this year on a track job in the snow) and wife are hunting with me now so I’m setting up multiple two man ladder stands (collective gasp) in my hardest too reach public spots and I’m just going to gun hunt those spots sparingly.

All the reasons you just mentioned I feel the same way. I still like saddle hunting, I just notice a much different experience and reaction with the deer than I expected and they are much less tolerant than if I’m sitting in something. Took me a while to come to terms with that but I think it is true, at least for me.

I just sold my platform and bought a LWCG .5 stand. Just took hunting with it once to know that’s where I want to be. The best parts for me: I can sit still and relax my body by actually sitting on something solid (had the same problem getting picked off and fidgeting too in the traditional saddle stance), the stand is lighter weight than my Mission platform with more real estate (i still think the Mission is a great platform), it is just as easy to set up as the Mission was, then lastly, to saddle hunt, all I have to do is stand up, turn around and lean back. Done. Best of both worlds, checks all my important boxes.

I don't get busted very often in a lock on standing with the seat up and leaning back with good camouflage and back cover. I had 5 big bucks under me this year when I shot my 9pt at 16ft up and 12y shot. 20201003_181726.jpg20201003_181729.jpg

I have deer look right at me and as long as I don't make a mistake I usually don't get busted.20201003_185224.jpg

This was my fourth season saddle hunting. I started the year using a Mission platform. It was nice to stand on but I got tired of trying to pack it and my climbing method and a backpack. I broke out the ring of steps about the time the pre rut started. The packability was much better but I found myself getting busted and maneuverability lacking. I got busted by deer within bow range 5 times but was fortunate to finally kill a bucks as he was turning to leave. I also had a number of deer that I couldn’t get around the tree on due to leaning trees. I finally got tired of the above problems and picked up an Assault stand and felt like it solved a number of the issues I was having. I used a rock climbing harness on some sits and my saddle on others. I felt like my coverage was better and I didn’t have to awkwardly move around the tree. I also seemed to get busted less. Still trying to figure out what to do for next year but will probably use the stand.

I believe with rifle I’ll use a platform or ROS very easy to shoot all directions and use a tree or tether as a rest...for archery I’ll probably be ordering the Beast Stand and use my saddle

I really like the rock harness with lower tether to the tree and my .5 for going in deep the best of both. And my Assault 2 for the all day setup.

Why the rock harness vs normal saddle if you don’t mind me asking ?

Safety fall protection and with the 8mm dynamic rope and prusic and carabiner I can adj bowline knot to the tree. I can shoot as a saddle behind the treeScreenshot_20210103-094510_Gallery.jpg

You must have seen Jason’s set up too! I have thought about going to that exact setup.

My wife actually got me one of those Ameristep chair blinds for Christmas. It'll get used on rainy days. Granted it's probably not big enough to draw a bow in so it'd be used for gun or I've been looking at a budget crossbow. Not sure a Buddy heater would fit comfortably in it either but at least I'd be dry ha. I'm waiting for the LWCG portable ladder stand ha.

P.S. still haven't gotten my Predator into the woods. At this rate it'll probably won't happen until next season.

Those are magic during turkey hunting.

A saddle is a tool. Use the very best tool at your disposal for your hunting situation. Your set up may change every week.

I don’t think people sit in there saddle enough early enough before season. It seems the more hunts under my belt during the year the more comfortable my saddle gets.

I am intrigued with this Jason set any links or references? I was wondering about fall arrests and the such...shamefully I did not use anything besides a rigging belt and HHS tree rope...

Any particular rock harness anyone recommends? I’ll be using a .5 stand moving forward but also doing the hybrid saddle hunting thing out of it at the same time. Would like something fall rated maybe in place of my regular saddle.

I am not giving up on the traditional saddle set and practice in the yard...Trees with leans in anyway effect my mobility while hanging in a saddle...with a compound

When I setup a "2 man" stand for my wife and I, it's a lightweight hang on with 4 sticks and a safety rope. Each stick has a single step aider. That allows me to hang the stand at 20+ easy. When I come down, I take the bottom stick with me.

That keeps most people from monkeying with our setup, especially if it's way back in. Then when we use it, she brings a stick and I bring a small platform. I put the stick on and climb up first, set the platform on the back side, and hang from my saddle. Then she climbs up using the safety rope and sits in the stand.

It works really well and beats lugging a giant 2 man ladder around. Just an idea that may make your life a little easier...
