Team 5 Thread

Passed 2 smaller 8s so far! Lots of action

Ended up seeing 10 or so deer throughout the morning all pretty close. Got the doe taken care of and in the truck, pretty warm now so expectations for the evening are low. Going to relocate tomorrow if I don’t stick one tonight as I have mucked it up pretty bad in here and I have a bad wind for access tomorrow

Rainy tomorrow but a cold front. Gonna be a long wet sit I think. Hopefully, I have even more points in me tomorrow as I could use a buck upgrade. If not, lots of season left. Lets keep the ball rollin' fellas!!

I’ve got two buck tags and a doe tag and I plan on using them

Well , I shot a doe last night ( last day for me to fill an either /or tag and I have 3 tags )
what I thought was going to be a easy recovery turned into a 5 hour track with an unrecovered deer. Bummed
(good blood vanished , had a dog come)
there have been threads on muzzleloader ballistics / lack of exit and I’ll spare the details but I finally got a poor outcome ( over 10 deer taken with my current set up )

I’m sorry brother. That’s a terrible feeling.

Man that is rough. It’s hard to see impact with a muzz too in my experience

Man, that sucks. I hate ML’s personally, but that’s because of a bad experience with a snake when I was young.

Saw 1 deer today. In the field enjoying the time I decided he was a one more year buck. Now that I’m home I’m thinking I should’ve tried to bring him with me. Haha.

Bummer of the day was when I went to put my pack on I realized a mollie pouch I keep my headlamp and rangefinder in had apparently gotten knocked off when I hiked out of the last place I went. Stopped by Harbor Freight and got the headlamp thing squared away, ordered a less expensive rangefinder I’ll give a try to. Had the last one
for 7-8 years so at least I got that going for me.

Had some bumps in the road this year, got a feeling good things are going to happen, things tend to even out in life.

Another day trying to catch up to lawn boy. I saw 6 does and heard other deer. Worst of it all, the hunter sign is starting to show up. One more week till gun season opens.

The forecast here is calling for a bunch of snow in the day’s leading up to the gun opener. If I track a big Buck on snow wearing my saddle does it still count?

Didn’t get out today, had my daughters birthday party. Chatted with my dad about the season so far, showed him some videos of what I’ve passed on. Fun to hear him tell the birthday crowd of my first buck fever encounter in the woods when I was 12. That 30 years went quick but he sure remembers it like it was yesterday. Haha

its annoying , all other target deer dropped within about 30 yards, from 12 to 75 yards.
I saw a buddy hit a doe at close range as we were splitting up to / scout hunt a large piece last year With a very similar set up, we could not tell if she even got hit . It was bizarre.
not long after I about knocked a doe into the air, but she ran about 30 yards, stumbled and crashed. No blood until i walked up to her.

the tough part for me is prioritizing more time in the woods this late due to other obligations, daylight is so short around work. I got on them a number of times early season but not recurve close. ( if I haven’t mentioned that 10 times already)

i actually have a lever .44 on hold but keep getting delayed. was back and forth on a s220 but ammo is $$ and it’s a pita to find . My muzzleloader has been my go to locally where it is shotgun/ muzz or pistol caliber. I want something i can more easily inspect than swapping out a primer. Haven’t used a rifle in a bit but I miss it a little
past 3 seasons I prioritize bow season and have a tough time adjusting when the crowds really hit the woods,

anyway your recent feedback to others, is really encouraging . Well done.
in the off season I am building out a new ML load and picking up my .44 howitzer , and one year I’ll tag out during bow season!

Thank you.

We only have a 10 day ML season here so It’s just not a big thing anymore. It was before crossbows were made legal for everyone during archery season (Sep 15-30) as the non bow hunters would hunt the ML season (Oct 1-10) before the rifle season (Oct 11-Jan 1) opened. We can use archery equipment during any open season.

I’ve only hunted with a ML a handful of times and something stupid always seems to happen, lol. Dirty nipple kept the caps from igniting the powder while I was trying to shoot a snake once when I was a teenager. Then had three wild dogs try to face off with me just a few years ago. Killed what appeared to be the leader with the only shot I had, lol. That was the last straw, lol.

Truth be told, it’s bow hunting and the short season that’s kept me away from them.

Things are heating up around here. While I usually hunt all over this part of the state, this year I’ve put alot of time in close to home. I’ve been seeing does almost every hunt - which is an achievement on its own. Meanwhile I’m really honong in on the big guy. I’d love to get him this week with the bow. But damn he’s in trouble once they let me track him on snow with a gun…IMG_5760.jpeg

I’ve got to work tomorrow and then 5 straight days off. I’m seeing more chasing around here lately that I usually see earlier in the month. Won’t get to be out on Thanksgiving day itself since I’m in charge of the meal but should get some good time in the rest of the week.

Evening sit with the 8 year old. I feel we’re in the least likely to succeed group but we’re out here. He’s using my platform as a chair and I’m tethered in at ground level so I’ve got a seat. I let him pick the spot so we’re about 100 yards from the parking lot. Honestly I’d never walked this way and he found two scrapes and a freshish pile of scat. When he said let’s just sit here I couldn’t find a valid reason to disagree. Not like I’ve been super hunter all season.
