Team 9 Thread

The plan is set for tomorrow morning. I will use the kayak to get to a section that is a water access only part of the WMA. Should be low pressure and bullet proof morning access. The area backs up to private land that is deer hunted (shooting houses and green fields from the satellite imagery). Hope the deer will feed back onto the public to bed in the thick and/or hillside. There are several soft transition edge lines in the varying types of timber from the hill tops to the ridge edges. SE wind. Also, this is a completely blind/map scout only hunt. So things could go terribly wrong or amazingly right.

Well yall... think I'll be able to get out tomorrow morning for the first time this season!

Yesterday the wind looked like it was going to be good and I could either go to a "play it safe" spot where I've got a doe crossing the camera semi-frequently... OR I could go right into the thick of the bedding that I have seen a buck or two occasionally pass through back in JUN-JUL. Wind looked to be right for both spots.

Checked again today and the wind forecast changed for tomorrow. The safe bet setting up on that doe is no longer safe. The bedding area looks like it's going to be ok. I haven't been down there in quite awhile though and I don't want to be fumbling around down there in the morning. I have a general idea of where the tree is that I could hunt but have no idea if the tree cover will allow me to shoot or not.

Plan on heading out early tomorrow morning so we'll see how the wind is then.

Already faced some challenges. The put in spot I map scouted was no good. Had to find new kayak launch site. Put me about 30 min behind and ate my 20 min buffer. On the water trolling in. Will be a little late, but I’ll get there.

Original spot had zero deer sign. Kept walking til I found some. After walking a bit, it went from zero to 100 in an instant. Stumbled upon a hot white oak. Saw 20-30 piles of poop. I’ve heard at least 100 acorns fall already this morning. Thermals are pulling scent downhill so I had to switch positions. I’m a bit exposed cause I had to climb the downhill side. Although I’m about 15-20 ft up, I may only be 5-10 above the deers eyes because of the hill. Better to be late than never here.

Four does came through around 0900. Too much thicket between us for a shot. Got down at 1030.

I count it a success though... safely up a tree, safely down a tree, and saw some deer. Bueno!

No dice for me. Didn’t see a deer. It was some of the best sign I’ve seen for a feed tree. May try to slip out for an afternoon hunt on Monday. The oak tree should still be hot then. I think an afternoon set up would work better too.

I saw 16 does&fawns tonite...not a buck in sight...its a great red moon tomorrow morning...should be good...the beans are starting to get harvested around me here in ohio...got plenty of nite pictures of some good bucks but hardly any day time pics...im believing its going to heat up around the 24th...weather has been really to hot for day time movement, however the bucks are beginning to break up...and that's a good thing....wanting to throw an arrow in the nxt couple of days and hope you get a shot yourself Bama

Since last night, Hudson (my 4 year old son) was begging for deer steak for breakfast. I still had some tenderloins wet aging from last week so I cooked one up for him for breakfast. In his prayer he said, “Dear God, thank you for making deer and for this food, Amen.”

Also, he frequently says, “I like the red part”. He is a fan of Medium to Medium rare. I’m so proud.

Yall can do it too brother! Think the hardest part is convincing everyone they don't NEED ~$150 sticks. ;)
haha! I am a bit ashamed of what I spent on Beast Sticks and what I’m tempted to try for Tethrd sticks.

how much total would it cost to put together your system?

also, how hard is it going around limbs?

Dude, it can cost as much or as little as you want it to. Depends on how you want to create it. :D

Seriously though, I bet you have everything you need right now... got two tethers, two prusiks, and two carabiners? You can get up a tree with just that for sure. Or, you can do like I did and pay someone to make you up a daisy chain. Mine also has a rappel aspect to it so there's a bit of money wrapped up in that too. Think @always89y has an entire rappel kit (almost just like mine) for sale right now for $130.

As far as going around limbs, it's pretty much exactly like any other method. I stand on my lower tether foot loop and throw my lineman's around the trunk above the limb. Then I unhook my tether and reattach it above the limb. Next I unhook my lower tether and move it above the limb and keep on going.

I’m very interested. I would love to never catch a stick on brush and briars again. It can be very thick in the places I go.

Who did your daisy chain? Any particular length to look for?

Where might one find @always89y rappel gear for sale?

Does someone sell that leg attachment? That seems pretty clutch.

The daisy I use came from @Sam Switalski. You don't have to buy a special one though. You can use a daisy from a stick you already have. If you dont already have one, Sam is a good guy. A 7' or 8' will work.

Looks like @always89y already sold his kit so next best thing (if you want a setup like mine) is to go grab the following from @DanO: 35' of Canyon C-IV, a Safeguard, a delta link, and 10' of TRC. Next make up some tether assist tools. You can fashion them out of zip ties, or go to Genesis 3D Printing and grab some TATs from Austin. He's a good guy too.

Next for the thigh loop (yes, a critical piece of gear), @always89y is coming up with a DIY version that he'll be posting the "how to" on the Ultra Light 2.0 thread soon.

Back at it in NC on this rainy day.
