Is there a consensus of opinion on the Tethrd carabiners? Are they made by a familiar brand? Thanks.

+1 on this question. Not knocking the carabiners that come with the Tethrd LB and tether, but has anyone swapped them out for something stronger or considered better in some way?

There is rarely a consensus opinion but I’m pretty confused as to why there is a sudden opinion circulating that these are unsafe or not made well. Seems like it’s all coming from an accident where the only info came from an accusatory, now deleted, post where many people suggest that user error was likely involved (none of us know of course). Is there something seemingly unsafe about this? I’m new so maybe I just need to be educated but it seems unlikely to me they are selling them and printing the specs on them if they aren’t safe to use 57D44AE2-8FCC-4B11-8A15-44FCDC8828CA.jpeg

It meets European safety standards so that’s good enough for me. I imagine they worked with a major manufacturer. To put things in perspective the ratings on their biner are very close to a Black Diamond Rocklock Screwgate which is a popular choice here. If y’all have a question about a product please reach out to the manufacturer and get data.

I'd ask and only use if someone else (reputable climbing or arborist brand) made them.

Making a carabiner properly is a very complicated thing, and it is odd to me that they would make it seem like they made them.

I look at it this way, Cabelas/ Bass Pro sells their Blackout branded bows when in reality it’s a rebadged Bear. A biner is safety equipment true so it’s not a straight apples to apples comparison true. I emailed Tethrd, we’ll see what they say.

yep....if it were me.....i'd spell it out that black diamond made it for us....but we requested customizations from them to make it more hunt friendly (earth tone, low sheen, maybe a quiet covering or the thingie to keep ropes on one end....stuff like that)

Let me ask my question a different way. Let’s assume that the Tethrd labeled carabiners are Black Diamonds. Has anyone ever swapped out a Black Diamond (or other maker) for a different brand? I’m guessing the answer is “yes” because people tinker, etc. So my question again is what’s an ideal alternative if one wanted options?

they're all good but people have preferences

i prefer screw lock petzl carabiners because i trust the brand and also i like screw locks and their safety red system

Excellent / thank you. I had read a few threads about the Petzl red system and they are on my list. But I also read posts about Grivel and DMM, and admit some were in the screw lock vs auto debate, and maybe one was referenced more for the oval to work with Kong Duck - so I’m easily confused. I will spend more time with the search function but welcome anyone else’s feedback.

I’ve used the Tethrd branded biners and I think they are fine. I don’t happen to own any at the moment, but I never had any quality or safety concerns with them when I did and I would be fine using them again. That said, I much prefer more compact biners such as the Metolius Bravo, DMM Phantom, Ocun Hawk, or BD LightForge. I just feel the smaller size is more convenient and appropriate for my use. I also prefer biners that are made by the most reputable brands and in western countries, even though a couple in my list above don’t meet that latter criteria. Tethrd does not provide the name of the manufacturer or the country of origin and that does bother me a bit, but not enough to refuse to hang from one of theirs.
