The excruciating pains of getting older

right there with you!! I may only be 43 but I have had 4 back surgeries, a pine tree dropped in my lap, broken bones from motorcycle mishaps, fallen off of 2 story houses, etc........ So I definitely feel your pain!!! If we only knew when we were young how bad it would be later in life maybe we would not have been so stupid!!!! This is also why we need to be safe nowadays cause we cannot heal like we use to!!!!
You are right on about those youthful decisions. My goal as a teen was to dunk a basketball. Practiced non stop on a 9' rim. Finally accomplished my goal... Now my knees have no more shock absorbing qualities left. Sure wasn't worth it! We punish our bodies in our youth, lifting too much, blowing out backs, so on. Compile that with excess weight, a recipe for disaster!

These are muscle cramps, not internal. I will ask the doc but pretty sure he won't be much help.

Cramps it might just be dietary deficiency. Maybe pop a multivitamin or use one of those nutrient boosters in your water bottle before or during your hike.

Flip side is climbing elevation is pretty core intensive. If these are muscles you don’t use frequently you might need to figure out how to exercise them some other way. Walking on an incline treadmill, rowing machine, recumbent bike all come to mind.

I’ve lived in Florida for 14 years now and went back home to east Tn couple years ago to hunt and thought I was going to die. When I was in my teens I could run up those mountains but at 40 it just ain’t happening. Had my mind set on climbing the big ridge on my inherited property from grandparents till I studied the Topo. 1000’+ vertical elevation change in as many lateral feet. No thanks. Hunted the bottom and just dreamt of the saddle on top.

63 here. Triple disc neck fusion a couple yrs ago. Just added a heart attack to the list 4 months back. One day they’ll find me dead in the saddle. Hopefully mot too soon!

Hang in there as long as we can climb and eat and drink beer we're ok.

Seen too many folks in peak shape take a nose dive at a certain age. To some its just unavoidable I guess.

Diet has everything to do with my aches and pains at 62 years of age. Eating wheat makes my body hurt in multiple places.
Check out the keto diet for more information.

52 but feel really good - started CrossFit 10 years ago and it put me on a great path. I have had 2 shoulder surgeries since and my back gets tight but have bounced back well (but slowly). I have been in best shape of my life these last 10 years. I have - at times - cramped after I'm out in the sun long stretches - middle of the night - got stabbed in the leg kind of cramps. Couple of things I try to be mindful of - water - yes plenty of it is key - but when you start peeing clear the water is not getting absorbed and you are passing it thru so it's not very helpful at that point. Make sure you hydrate well before the activities and replace what you are losing in exertion. Avoid sugary drinks - including Gatorade. Potassium is good - bananas like others have said. Reality is we slow down and our bodies will take longer to recover, so having consistent exertion / exercise will help there. Good luck man - age is a number, not a prison sentence.

They are not helpful for weight control, but potato chips have as much or more potassium than bananas!
Per ounce it was the highest in the book when I worked at the USDA. Dried banana chips should be high. too.

Two things I'll never stop till they find me dead. Hunting and sex........Not sure of the order!
Going out during sex would be the greatest for 2 reasons... The first bring obvious. The second, perhaps it would traumatize the wife enough that she would never attempt to have sex again after I'm gone!

The heart attack my have been a good thing for me. I got terrorized looking into the face of the guy that wears the big black robe. Changed my whole life. Stopped eating crap lost 45lbs. and started exercising like a madman. Yesterday was my first day of bear hunting season. I'm not very good at it and actually have never even seen a bear while targeting them, but it was fun taking my gun for a walk. she likes going in the woods this time of year!
