Theft issues

I was just curious how big of a problem theft is in everyone’s hunting areas. I’ve had a quad stolen right out of the back of my truck loaded with gear. I know of someone this year having their vehicle cleaned out while hunting.

I’ve never had a camera stolen but know lots of people who have lost many to theft.

How does everyone deal with this? After losing my quad, Sitka jacket and a bunch of other stuff I can’t bring myself to leave anything in my truck anymore.

Johns van of death is definitely not an option, everything would be gone.

Personally my faith in people has dwindled rapidly the past few years. I leave basically nothing in my vehicle that is worth stealing. I have had stands stolen from my backyard, quad from my shed, etc. Cameras go missing locally all the time.

Where the skys are so blue!
I have never had a problem, and I hunt public land almost exclusively. But I drive older cars and NEVER leave gear out in the open. Most thieves are looking for targets of opportunity. If they see a 96 Blazer with nothing but a few McDonalds wrappers in the floorboard next to a big, lifted Tundra with a Matthew's decal and goodies in the backseat, whose window are they going to break?

It's bad for sure, but most folks aren't going to break in if they can't see something of value. Risk/reward.

I leave my rear seats folded down, and if I leave something I keep it under there.

I know with treestands and ladders, and trail cams. If it ain't locked and cabled, it's gone.

Never had my vehicle broken into when hunting, but did in my yard. I leave my case open so they know there isn't anything in it if they peep thru the window. That being said I'd really like an E bike but can't imagine leaving $3k+ laying in the woods for some clown to walk off with.

I’ve also been considering an E bike. I share your fears of leaving it somewhere though. I think a cable lock would protect it for the most part, but a true thief would be prepared to cut that. I think as long as the bikes were used to get to hunting spots rather than parking areas they would be fine.

Before I switched to a saddle I actually had more stands stolen off private land than public. It’s sad but I happens. I often see other people cameras or stands in the woods and wonder how soon they’ll get snatched.

Ive looked into motion sensored pin hole cameras and a mobile dvr, run about $200. Put somewhere on the front and rear bumpers, catchem from either direction. I hate thieves.

I’ve only had one item stolen and that was a loc on stand almost 25 years ago. It was one of those tiny platform, folding bar with cordura seat stands that was beyond uncomfortable.

I was supposed to have it out within 10 days of the end of the season and I didn’t so it MAY have been DNR that got it, but just in case the thief’s conscience got the best of them I wrote a note telling them all was forgiven and they could keep the $5 bill that was included in the ziploc bag with the note if they promised not to bring it back. Hated that dang stand, lol.

In Canada? This is surprising to me.

Have yet to have trailcams stolen that I leave on public land (always cabled, usually elevated). Have not had my vehicle tampered with ever AFAIK. Counting my blessings...

Yes in Canada too. The theft in my region is out of hand. Not just hunting related but property crime in general has spiked huge in the last few years.

I can't say too much about theft in your area, but i can say that is some nice ground around you. I have family in Kelowna/Penticton and have done some fishing in the area. If you ever need a Leaf fan to come hunt with you, let me know!!

I have had 3 cameras stolen 2 years in a row. I put them about 12 feet up.in a tree so far so good. Fingers crossed.
