Treesteps got stolen, Wildedge steps or Muddy Pro sticks?

Do you leave the bolts in the tree, or is the hole drilled large enough that you just insert the bolt and take them out when you leave, also if you put the bolts in in the dark, how do you see the holes?

Some put twigs in the holes to make it easier to find, others scribe the tree with their saw to help locate the hole.

It's a users choice. The bolts fit snug but are easy to insert and pull out. The only reason that I would leave my bolts in a tree would be because I knew for sure that I was coming back that evening or the next morning. And, that don't happen very often. I don't climb a tree in the dark without a headlight and when the bolt holes are always drilled at the same pace (knee high) they aren't hard to find. I've never thought it was necessary to put sticks in the holes, but I have used a saw to scrape the bark around the hole a few times.

This video, demonstrates the drill & bolt system has been posted on this site several times. That demonstration begins at about 8:45 into the video.

This video, demonstrates how easy it is to use the cordless drill to preset a tree for using bolts for steps.

Some guys have been having issues with Muddy sticks breaking. Wild Edge steps are great steps and the aider works well with the steps. I highly recommend Wild Edge steps and the aider.

I was going to fix up a ratchet strap from strapworks with 3 Ameristeps, but they may be on the recall list so now I am thinking about ordering 3 Wildedge steps for a platform, that way I can work with the steps and see how I like them compared to my sticks and maybe end up buying more steps. Thoughts?
I would check the Ameristep to see if they are on the list. Look on the side of the steps for model number 105 or 155 and an 08 for year made of this is on your step than they are recalled if not you should be good to go.

Is there any permanent damage done to the trees you drill?

No. The holes grow back in. In fact, if you drill a tree in spring, the holes will be grown in by fall. You can reduce the value of lumber though.
