Were there any crows, owls or any other noises that could cause shock gobbling? I have never heard of a turkey rut in the fall.

No, I'm just kidding about the rut part, its supposed to be the deer rut!. I have read about them gobbling all year but this was the first time I have heard it. They were very vocal this morning. I must have heard over 50 gobbles, and a ton of yelping.

That's awesome!

Back in October, I was mentoring the Wounded Warrior Hunt and I was sitting in a box blind with a USMC Master Sgt....Very awesome guy. Well anyway, we first saw a bear cub, then a short while after, he spotted some gobblers down the hill.

It was thunder and lightning out and after one of the claps of thunder I thought I heard a gobble. I wasn't sure though....A second clap of thunder and now I was sure I heard a gobble. I carry a diaphragm call with me all the time just in case I need to cover leaf noise with some soft turkey sounds, so I broke it out and called all three of those suckers up the hill right past us at like 20 yards. The one bird was BIG, his beard was dragging the whole way....wish it was the Fall season for them that day. The three longbeards went over the hill and out of sight, but I could hear the one bird gobbling to every damn clap of thunder for over an hour. Crazy!

When those bird brains get fired up, they just can't help themselves. lol

I don't think some people believed me, they thought birds only gobbled in the Spring, but this isn't the first time I've heard them in Fall/Winter. Glad you heard them going crazy too...

That is AWESOME! I have read about them gobbling year round, and Ray Eye talks about it all the time but this was the first I heard it. The morning I made this post they were going crazy, I don't even know how many gobblers there were around. A couple of mornings later in a completely different spot I had more turkeys gobbling!

That's freaking awesome.

Turkey gobbles, elk lip bawls and the sound of deer hooves running towards you in the leaves are three sounds that get me so fired up I could spontaneously combust.

I'm with you! I haven't been elk hunting yet but whenever I hear a bugle on tv it gets me so fired up. An archery elk hunt is #1 on my bucket list.

Here in Pittsburgh Pa they been gobbling for about two weeks or so. No crows but the hens are there and the gobblers are strutting for the hens.
