So today was my first run and gun setup, the area i hunt has an abundance of white oaks, for some reason it seems that the steps come loose throughout the sit, i believe i have stretched out the ropes properly.

Does anyone here have the same issue with white oaks or do you think it's a rope stretch issue.

I can tell you my climb down tonight was sketch i actually ended up running my tether hooked up to my bridge along with my linemans belt all the way down the tree because several steps kicked out on me

I have never had any problems on White Oaks. When you say the steps kicked out, did they on cam on you or just slip on you?

It sounds like you still have a little stretch left in your ropes. I know Several people recommend leaving them on the tree overnight but Andrew from Wild Edge has stated to cam them over really tight 4 or 5 times to get the stretch out.

To help with the stretch out put them on and leave them on a tree overnight. Make sure you have the rope going under /inside the standoff so it’s camming properly. On softer bark trees you may have to recam each step to get it really tight. First cam never is tight enough as bark gives. I have had them shift on me but never heard of one kicking out. It would have to be REALLY loose Even when shifting I never felt unsafe. The step isn’t going to come off. As you set a step pull down on it with all your weight and that will let you know if it’s going to shift when you step onto it.

If they were becoming un cammed I bet the rope was not going under the standoffs. I would re watch all of the wild edge videos to make sure that you are doing everything correctly and if you have not let the steps sit overnight on a tree to stretch the ropes do that as well. I dont think it has anything with the tree. Good luck!

Rope stretch. I'm new to the steps. I've had no problems on White Oak. In fact, my first set with WE Stepps was in a gnarly, twisted, White Oak. These things used with the "Cain method" is my new go-to, public climbing method.

If they uncammed the Rope was either over the standoffs or you didn't lift the stand-ups high enough before camming it. Make sure you lift the standoffs above the Rope before you cam it down.

You don't necessarily have to leave the steps on a tree overnight to get the stretch out. Just cam each step over really tight four or five times.
